The Latch Hook Covered Bridge project as of May 12, 2025
It’s a very good thing I purchased all my yarns ahead of time for this latch hook rug project.
And I shall explain.
First, a recap. Here’s the left panel of what will be a three-panel rug.
And I’m currently working on the right panel, and here’s where I was the last time I blogged about the project.
As I mentioned in the previous blog post, by ordering all my yarn for this project ahead of time, I’ve basically guaranteed I can finish this rug without dealing with Trumpflation or tariffs or supply chain issues. It also guarantees that I can work on this in my idle time. Whatever “idle time” actually means. Ha.
Well, I did get a burst of “idle time” going, and take a lookie at how far I got on this.
So what you see here is not only the road and the curb … but you also see the right side of the fence. All the little pickets in the fence. Sweet.
And I have to mention this. Working on this rug is a calming technique for me. If I have to keep dealing with the craziness in the world today, at least I can insulate myself by working on this, so that every time I view it in progress, it’s another step towards peace and relaxation. Working on this rug keeps my blood pressure from hitting TILT.
And trust me, when we’re dealing with Trump and Musk and Kennedy Jr and all the other knuckleheads …
I’ll take this any day of the week.

The Latch Hook Covered Bridge project as of April 17, 2025
So right now I’ve finished the left panel for my super-sized covered bridge latch hook project. And as I continue to update progress on this blog, I’m going to leave the left panel available for you to see how the covered bridge appears.
So now we’re working on the right panel. This is where I was two weeks ago on the project.
And I should note right now … I’m damn lucky that I ordered ALL my rug strands in one bulk purchase.
Because guess where Herrschner’s sources all their sliced yarn from?
You guessed it. China.
Which means that if i purchased the strands now, I’d most likely pay twice to three times the original price for the yarn, to offset the cost of the tariffs. Yeah. The Chinese manufacturer’s going to pay the tariffs by jacking up the price of the yarn. And Herrschner’s isn’t going to eat the tariff cost; they’re going to have to pass that increased cost on to me.
That’s right, kids. Even hobby crafts like this are going to get whacked by Trumpflation. Ugh.
Well, at least I can show off this little figure, can’t I? Here’s two weeks’ progress on the latch hook rug’s right panel.
So what you’re seeing now is the width of the right panel. You can see some white diagonal lines; that’s the road curbstones. And those vertical white lines on the far right edge? That’s the white picket fence for that side of the road. Yes, the covered bridge is framed by two white picket fences.
I just hope I can get this done before we get clobbered by some other Trump tariff. Ugh. Must – keep – going.

I want to do latch hook again to see if I like it (I last tried it when I was 5 and then I carried around a Strawberry Shortcake wall hanging with about 2" done on the bottom for the next 20 years before putting it in a yard sale). I have an amazingly 1970s kit somewhere in my office, but I saw this today and it is giving me feelings.

I am on an old white wizard tear, apparently! (Srsly, just bought 4 wizard puzzles that should be 70s airbrushed van art.)
After about eight months, the last thread is hooked! All 11,800-odd of 'em... 😏
The next step is to fold over and stitch the canvas edges, and add a means to hang it on the wall.
For scale, it is about 70cm(27.5") wide and about 80cm(31.5") high.
In case you're curious, it's a coat of arms I devised for a character in a story I wrote.
Almost there...
Just fifteen rows left to go of the 120 total. Then I have to learn how to finish it neatly and set it up for hanging on the wall!

Continued progress on the #SparkleUnicornLatchHook - I bought a skein of Red Heart Metallic, which isn't quite as sparkly as I want but it's the best I could find for $5, and I don't really want to spend more than that on this project :)
Made a jig out of a piece of cardstock folded to half the length I want each piece of yarn; I can wrap the yarn around the card a bunch of times and then cut at the open side of the fold, making at least a dozen right-size pieces at once.
I remember when I started this feeling very intimidated by how many threads I had to hook, and thinking I'd been horribly over-ambitious for my first latchhook project.
And look at it now! Turning out pretty well, I think!
Edit: from memory, it's roughly 11,000 total threads, and I've got ~3,000 to go.

My mum is very ill, I didn't get a job recently, my house is chaotic with building work so I'm distracting myself with making this #latchhook cushion for my daughter. She's obsessed with #wolves
Further progress on the wall hanging.
It's a slow way to make an acoustic absorber for the home office walls, but it's starting to look pretty good!

Progress has been made. 😁
