@laurensvalk I cannot say enough about how awesome the work that @laurensvalk is doing - and how awesome he is as a person.

It is incredible that he has been able to do what the LEGO Group could not or did not want to do - unify the MINDSTORMS user experience under one app.

If you have a MINDSTORMS kit gathering dust bring it out again and try #pybricks - and if you don't want to do that, consider donating it to a kid in your area that is interested in tinkering.

#Retrocomputing #storytime !

At least, if you're like me and consider 15-year-old laptops that give me nostalgia “retro”! This Dell Inspiron 1420 has been with me through a lot. In 2008, I convinced my parents to support my budding interest in computer programming by getting me a laptop for my birthday. It wasn't the highest-spec'd laptop ever — 4 GB RAM and an almost-irrelevant #PentiumD . But it was mine! And it had this shiny new OS called #WindowsVista and an integrated nVidia GeForce 8400M GS graphics card!

And boy did I use the ever-loving crap out of it. I forced it to play Crysis (24 FPS at 800×600, baby!). I wrote dozens of terrible applications on it in C# in Visual Studio 2008.

One time, I decided to force myself to learn the #Dvorak keyboard layout. Except Dell, in their infinite wisdom, designed the keyboard specifically so that the keys could not be fully re-arranged; you see, the indexing keys — F and J, where your pointer fingers rest in the home position — have their butterfly hinges upside down compared to the rest of the keyboard. As the hinges are not centered on the back of the keycaps, those two keys don't fit in any other position without overlapping adjacent keys.

Well! I had a solution for that! A few minutes with some heavy-duty scissors and F, J, and the new Dvorak home-row keys U and H, were no longer “asymmetrical”!

I abandoned Dvorak after a few weeks - but the keyboard still bears the scars of that endeavor. I've long since lost the F keycap - the butterfly hinge, weakened by being replaced so many times to switch keyboard layouts, no longer held the cap securely and eventually was lost to the sands of time.

This laptop is sitting next to me now, getting a fresh installation of the OS it shipped with — Windows Vista Home Premium. Then I'm going to install some period-correct software — Visual Studio 2008, #Zune, maybe even the #LegoMindstorms programming environment — to create a time capsule of this precious-to-me artifact that sparked the beginning of what would ultimately become my career.

Some more #caffenol film development results. The camera was a Kodak Retina IIa, the film was Ilford HP5 Plus 400.

I used my own #lego #legomindstorms contraption to roll the film cannister for agitation. Not a major innovation, but it made me quite happy.

I enjoy developing my own film (black and white). I have even designed a "caffenol" recipe to replace chemical developers which works well for me.

What I do not enjoy is agitating/rolling the cannister for 7 1/2 minutes to develop the film. So I created a #lego thing from a #legomindstorms to do this for me.

The #nerd in me is please.

New Part Day: Raspberry Pi LEGO HAT

The Raspberry Pi Foundation have been busy little bees for the last couple of years producing their own silicon, new boards and now in collaboration with the LEGO Education team a new HAT to connect to the LEGO SPIKE education platform. This new HAT board will work with every Raspberry Pi board with a 40-pin GPIO header.

Based on the RPI2040 microcontroller, it makes an interesting detour away from dumb slave boards, although it looks like the firmware is closed (for now) so you'll have to make do with the pre-baked capabilities and talk to it with the supplied python library.

According to the documentation, the communication between the Pi and the RPI2040 nestled beneath the HAT PCB is plaintext-over-serial, freeing up the majority of the GPIO pins for other uses. The board uses a surface mount pass-through type header which allows pins from the Pi to protrude through the PCB, allowing stacking more HATs on top. Curiously they decided to mount the PCB with active parts facing down, giving a flat rear surface to park things on. We suspect that decision was made to improve access to the LPF2 connectors, especially if they were surface mount parts.

Compatibility with LEGO hardware is also fully documented, including the Spike Education portfolio, which comprises motors, a colour sensor, force sensor, and a distance sensor amongst others. Some parts from the mindstorms robot inventor kit as are also supported. LEGO have also introduced a new part, that they are calling the 'maker plate' which is specifically designed for mounting 'SBCs' but doesn't specify which ones. Clearly it looks like it will take Pi3/4 board, but we'll leave it to them to clarify other support.

A new higher-power power supply brick is also introduced, which feeds 8V into that barrel jack you may have noticed, as you may be aware, LEGO motors can pack quite a punch and trying to power those from the Raspberry Pi GPIO header will only end in frustration.

We've seen an enormous array of LEGO hacks over the years, and this new product is not the first hackable solution we've seen. Just checkout this Open Source Evlōno One for starters. This new product however is a nice example of a reasonably open company getting into bed with an established player and producing something cool and that is a good thing.
