Would you believe this epic windblown sandy desert valley place is in the Yukon? At the end of summer, I spent a month living out of my car and camping in the mountains up in northern Canada, and I was honestly blown away by the diversity of the landscapes. From snow-capped peaks and glaciers, to jagged black spiky mountains, volcanic lands where I swear dragon still live, to thousands of miles of endless tundra and boreal forests… to dry, sand-filled deserts?!

I was not expecting to stumble upon this place in my time up north, but wow, am I glad I did. I may have gotten totally sand-blasted in the wind for this photo (…and for days after I was literally finding sand *everywhere*, ha!) - but it was so worth it, running around like a kid who found a cool stick and became a wise wizard and decided to embark on a magical quest across the desert lands to the far off mountains and into the sunset.

Yep, it’s in these silly, beautiful moments that I become filled with gratitude and realize… the adventure-filled storybook life I used to always live in my imagination? I’m living it now. We can choose to live it now. One beautiful, childlike, sand-filled adventurous moment at a time.

The Mundari are cattle herders of South Sudan, the world's youngest country, who dedicate their lives to the care of their cattle.
They live in symbiosis with their Ankole Watusi cattle, characterized by their large horns.
In a cattle camp, everyone plays their role. Young boy and children are doing most of the daily work. They collect the fresh cow dung and put it into piles which are then set on fire.
Those fire are useful as they repel the (extremely) numerous and voracious flies and mosquitoes of the South Sudanese countryside.
The ash created by these fires is used to rub on themselves and their cattle, creating a protection against mosquitoes.
The children with few guardinas are sleeping with the cows.
The ash from dung fires, as fine as talcum powder, is often used as bedding.

Dusty Clouds Make More Ice

Even when colder than its freezing point, water droplets have trouble freezing–unless there’s an impurity like dust that they can cling to. It’s been long understood in the lab that adding dust allows water to freeze at warmer temperatures, but proving that at atmospheric scales has been harder. But a new analysis of decades’ worth of satellite imagery has done just that. The team showed that a tenfold increase in dust doubled the likelihood of cloud tops freezing.

Since ice-topped clouds reflect sunlight and trap heat differently than water-topped ones, this connection between dust and icy clouds has important climate implications. (Image and research credit: D. Villanueva et al.; via Eos)
