This felt like a bright future. No language barriers no more! A dream of mankind, which for example came true in fiction, such as the Babelfish you'd stick in your ear in “Hitchhiker's guide to Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. It was no coincidence that one of the first online translation systems was called #Babelfish, actually based on a #translation software called #SYSTRAN, which had started out in 1968 already! Babelfish was operated by the first big search engine, #AltaVista, until #Yahoo took over.
What we didn't forsee at all back then was that #AI #MachineTranslation would not be serving the user – but users would rather serve companies… especially one other search engine company that at some point has abandoned their slogan “don't be evil”.
We should have known. A (human) translator you can't trust is something we had seen in the movies already…

This feature opens up a whole new world for me. I can follow people whose language I wouldn't otherwise be able to decipher. A place where machine translations are helpful.

@flod the translations are still horrible and I'm not that great at languages. As I said before and as I will say again LLm stuff is a 90% technology and people need to accept that.
Don't scam people by promising em that last 10% It can never deliver but rather figure out how to reach the 90% with as little resources as possible.
How much more resources do we waste on Machine translations for slightly less bad results sinc the switch to "AI"?
Realism that's what's missing and that's nothing we can afford on a resource challenged overheating planet.

Warum bleibt eigentlich #machinetranslation so schlecht? Es müsste doch eigentlich mal aufgefallen sein, dass es keinen Kontext gibt, in dem "finish" auf einem Button einer Webpage als "Ziel" zu übersetzen ist?
Oder warum wird "placed on" im Kontext mit "order" als "platziert auf" wiedergegeben? Ist die Technologie mit der Erkennung von Kontext schon überfordert, wenn #Html dazwischen steht?

The amount of badly translated to Spanish interfaces I see online is very high. The translation of "open" as in "to open" is "abrir", not "abierto", and so on (my mail service is asking me if I want to "vacío" my spam folder). I guess most companies machine-translate everything nowadays and don’t pay anyone to check afterwards, even for the most basic things. #translation #machineTranslation #ux #ui #spanish #spanishLanguage

Luckily, Tiziana Ilie, M.A. student and first author on this project, did a grand job presenting our work on how DeepL deals with pronomial pickups of the hybrid noun "Mädchen". For this study, we used the #OpenSource model OLMo-2-7B to generate our experimental stimuli.
