I do love making meatballs. So many delicious options! Spiced chicken meatballs and Israelis cous cous with pine nuts and feta cheese.

Simple salmon sheet pan roasted on a bed of French green beans, slivered bell peppers and carrots, with homegrown cherry tomatoes and herbs scattered about. Zucchini sticks would work well also.

Marinate the salmon in lemon juice for a bit, bake at 400 til browned - and I also added capers and kalamata olives about 5 minutes before removing from the oven.

Tomato galette with more home grown tomatoes. (Yellow tomato is from the farmers market - we haven't been able to grow those with any success.) I tried a new pastry dough this time which incorporates parmesan cheese and an egg yolk - worked beautifully. The ricotta & feta cheese base has herbs from the garden mixed in. Before baking, I popped in some little mozzarella pearls to melt over the top.

After a long week in the field, I find it relaxing to do a little cooking.

Weekend brunch: zucchini fritters (combined with grated carrots, green onions, eggs, turmeric, fresh herbs, gluten free flour, baking powder) with basted eggs, sour cream, grated parmigiano reggiano and fresh garden tomatoes - Red Racer.

Only half of the zucchini fritters are showing now with egg yolks, some sour cream and tomatoes.

I need to make this more often. So easy and delicious: pasta with broccolini, garlic, feta cheese, lemon zest & juice, and fresh herbs. The sauce comes together with lemon juice, a dash of white wine, some pasta water. We do a lot with pasta in this household, often with no recipe: "So, what's in the fridge?"

Yes, it's me again, playing with food: my favorite Paul Bocuse Mac & Cheese using Perciatelli pasta... and of course another gardenscape to top it off because I just can't resist bringing garden design to the kitchen table.

Mac and Cheese sliced in an open casserole dish, showing the beautiful circular patterns created by the perciatelli pasta in an oval baking dish.Mac and Cheese with a gardenscape on the top, just out of the oven. With each layer, cheesy sauce is added, and then another layer of the pasta on top of that, until there are several layers of the perciatelli pasta and cheese sauce. Before baking, this is the gardenscape on top of the Mac and Cheese. Thinly sliced vegetables are laid on the top to look like a garden. There are chives, strips of carrots, thin asparagus, shallots, dill, green onions and mini bell peppers.

A ricotta-asparagus tart (I mixed some goat cheese with the ricotta, but feta is good too) with puff pastry and a little rack of lamb, medium rare, thank you very much. It doesn't take a whole lot of effort to make a nice little dinner at home. Happy Friday. Cheers!🍷

Easy sheet pan asparagus: lay asparagus in a single row on parchment paper, cut the cherry tomatoes in half and drop them in the end zone. Bake at 400 for 10-12 minutes, remove and add some mozzarella cheese, then pop back into the oven til the cheese is golden. Serve with basil chiffonade and kalamata olives.

This is my favorite holiday tart. I've made it for Thanksgiving and Christmas: Cranberry Curd with a Gingersnap Cookie Crust from Washington Post. Not too sweet and the pretty "jewels" around the edges are just like pairing earrings with a beautiful gown - the final flourish! Silver fluted plate is Annie Glass, Santa Cruz, CA.

Mise en place. Condiments to be served with lemongrass-ginger and coconut-chicken curry. One of my favorite winter meals and fun to serve to guests. Included here is a fresh coriander-mint chutney and a lemongrass-ginger paste which can be added to individual bowls according to taste.

Mice en place means "everything in its place." Pictured here from top left, clockwise: chopped green beans, diced pineapple, fresh coriander-mint chutney, fresh lemongrass-ginger paste, carrot spirals and the center: cooked vermicelli noodles. We had family visiting this Christmas - first time in SO LONG! So I did a LOT of cooking and it was a blast. Here's our Christmas Day charcuterie nibbles shaped like a wreath.

CharcuterieBoard

There are cheese wedges and mozzarella pearls, sliced red pears, pomegranate pearls, olives, cucumbers & cornichons, breadsticks and crackers. Crespelle in Brodo (Crêpes in Broth) is another holiday tradition around here. The broth is made from a slow-cooked organic chicken, then boned. Homemade crepes are filled and rolled with grated Parmigiano Reggiano (I also add some shredded chicken) and served in a bowl of piping hot broth.

It's become a Christmas family-favorite: a French-Canadian Tourtière. Using homemade pie crust, the filling is a combination of ground veal, lamb and bison with spices: cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and cardamom.

The meat pie is shown with a golden crust, and the pie is sitting on a dishcloth with pictures of fruit. In the center of the pie is the cut-out of a moose. I used a moose cookie-cutter to create the shape.

Part of Christmas Eve dinner: an upside-down tomato tart with carmelized onions, kalamata olives and goat cheese with a puff-pastry base - it did not disappoint.

Burrata, you have my heart and soul. Now.... to tackle the rest of the Christmas Eve meal.

Three photos in this collage of deviled eggs. Top left shows an aerial view of the deviled eggs, made square using an egg cuber. To the right is a closeup of the squared eggs, topped with dill and balsamic pearls. The eggs are cooked, then placed in an egg cuber for 6 hours before soaking in beet juice for about 3 hours, at which point they are sliced in half and made ready for serving. Bottom left is another view of the squared eggs.

Shudder! Seriously cold weather moving in now. Nothing tastes better than a beef roast in the slow cooker with mushrooms, roasted sweet potatoes, carrots, celery, onions, garlic and Yukon gold, cooking in a red wine-beef stock and passata sauce. Egg noodles on the side, of course, to soak up all that delicious gravy.

Continuing my obsession with Konjac Knots aka Shirataki Nests aka Yam Noodles (which are gluten free): I tried them this time with chili and black bean paste, alongside some Chinese broccoli with sesame oil, and heavily-spiced tofu crumbles. These things are going to be a regular menu item around here now. I'm looking forward to using the nests in Pho and other soups.

From the top left, clockwise: tofu crumbles which is a method of pressing the tofu first to remove excess water, then crumbling the tofu and baking it with lots of heavenly spices. Next to the tofu are the konjac knots (made from the corms of yams). I LOVE these noodles. And then I sautéed some Chinese broccoli with a dash of sesame oil, for a very flavorful lunch plate.

I am obsessed with Japanese konjac knot noodles aka Shirataki nests. Rinse thoroughly before cooking them in boiling water for 3-5 minutes. They're just like vermicelli noodles in texture and won't lose their shape. I dressed them with a ginger-garlic marinade and served with cucumber, tomato, tofu.

A close-up of the konjac knots. They hold their shape after a quick boil in hot water and have a texture like vermicelli.Served over a bed of freshly sautéed greens and fresh vegetables. Super healthy and gluten free. A colorful array of fresh vegetables, the konjac knots are served over freshly cooked greens, some tofu and a ginger-garlic dressing. So pretty.
