Hello everyone! Nicholas here with some important news to share and a call to action for the community.
Lately, I’ve noticed a troubling trend across Mastodon. Many servers, harmful accounts, and troll accounts that we are actively trying to limit, suspend, or defederate seem to have a shared agenda: undermining the safety and integrity of the platform. This pattern has become increasingly concerning, and it's something we cannot ignore.
Recently, I visited mastodon.social, one of the largest instances, and came across some alarming behavior. From what I observed, it seems the moderation team there is struggling to address the issue effectively. Harmful accounts are slipping through the cracks, and there’s an apparent lack of action to limit or suspend individuals engaging in malicious activities. What’s even more shocking is the prevalence of personal information being shared without consent—a clear violation of privacy laws across all countries. This not only endangers individuals but also erodes trust within the community.
Mastodon thrives on its diverse and decentralized nature, but this strength also makes it vulnerable to misuse. That’s why I want to strongly encourage all admins, moderators, and instance owners to take a proactive stance in protecting their servers and communities. Implement stricter moderation policies, enhance your monitoring tools, and, where necessary, consider defederating from instances that fail to uphold basic safety standards.
We all have a role to play in making Mastodon a safer, more welcoming space for everyone. Together, we can push back against those who seek to harm the community and preserve the values that make Mastodon unique. Let’s stand united and protect what we’ve built.
