Schauen wir wieder einmal zuerst in meine #MeineTimeline... #GlobalSwitchDay ist heute ein Thema,#Loops, nationaler „Ändere-dein-Passwort-Tag“, sehr viel Pixelfed, Strafzölle, Derrick (Horst Tappert) und es ist kalt! (Keine Sorge, politischer wird es jetzt nicht :wink: ).
#ÄndereDeinPasswortTag: Das mit den Passwörtern hab ich gerade erst ganz frisch hinter mir. Wenn man auf vielen Seiten/bei vielen Diensten angemeldet ist, kann das schon mal ein sehr umfangreiches Programm sein... 🙃😉
Ich habe mir mittlerweile Loops (Testflight) auf iOS runtergeladen und ein wenig getestet. Bis jetzt läuft die App stabil bei mir. Ich werde mir diese in den nächsten Tagen immer noch mal anschauen, aber ich bin mir sicher, dass hat Potenzial. Videos aus der App kann man direkt teilen, wie der unten stehende Link, passend zum #Caturday.
Zum Thema #GlobalSwitchDay... ja, an und für sich eine gute Idee. Aber ich bleibe bei der Meinung, dass man niemanden dazu drängen sollte. Das muss jeder für sich selbst wissen und auch selbst entscheiden dürfen, welchen Messenger/Dienst er/sie nutzt, ohne dafür verurteilt zu werden! Man kann anderen Menschen immer Vorschläge machen, Alternativen aufzeigen, aberjemanden dafür auszugrenzen oder gar zu beschimpfen, finde ich schon extrem grenzwertig!
BTW: Ein interessanter Messenger ist übrigens auch #Matrix -> Link: Element | Eine souveräne und sichere Kommunikationsplattform
Ich hatte mich auch vor kurzem dafür angemeldet und finde, Matrix ist eine sehr gute Alternative. Dort gibt es auch Gruppen, z.B. auch Fediverse-Gruppen!
So, das waren jetzt erstmal genug Informationen auf einmal. Ich hol mir noch Kaffee. :wink:

Also both are federated instead of relying on a central server that could any time shut down, change conditions or get a target for a totaliarian state

@andycarolan @robb indeed some apps and software are not easy to migrate, but we can start from low hanging fruits no? For Slack for example there is #mattermost or #MatrixMessenger .

I looked into Matrix back in 2020 on a far more superficial level. Back then I simply wanted to know whether non-technical users can rely on Matrix for encrypted chats without shooting themselves in the foot.
What I found was a huge mess. The different Matrix clients all had very different capabilities, also when it came to encryption. It was pretty much a matter of luck whether your Matrix client could establish an encrypted connection to another Matrix client, whether it would do so by default and whether it would notify you in a useful way if it failed to encrypt the connection. Even the official Riot messenger didn’t perform well. There clearly were no baseline requirements, and expecting users to recognize whether they are secure or not just doesn’t work.
I later got a reply from the developers. I can only quote approximately since that was on Twitter so the conversation is lost now. It essentially boiled down to the fact that reliable encryption was never a design goal of the protocol. They wanted to give client developers the most flexibility. So client developers took that and largely implemented only the easy parts.

Putting a bunch of bridges into Matrix to try and centralize my messaging is really giving me Trillian/Pidgin vibes. :neofox_what: Except Trillian/Pidgin were way more straightforward (no shade to Matrix, it's not really what it's meant for).
It's depressing thinking back to when XMPP was super promising and companies were on board to implement it. Instead of that happening, they all teamed up to crush it and messaging has stayed the same level of fragmentation (or, depending on how you look at it, gotten worse) in the meantime.

Are there reasons for or against certain servers?
