See a lot of people talking fondly about #Skype, which recently shut down. Tech memories:
When Skype came out, it was actually scary. Before Skype, IM protocols were all reverse engineered and people often used Multi Messengers, like #Pidgin or #Trillian. Skype had strong obfuscation and encryption, so it didn’t get reverse engineered, you had to use the official client.
Also Skype was hated by Admins, because it bypassed firewalls.
Anyway, it’s actually just Teams now. So not really gone.

#Viber заблокировал 13 декабря 2024 года. По информации РКН: «доступ к сервису Viber ограничен в связи с нарушением требований российского законодательства к ОРИ, выполнение которых необходимо для предотвращения угроз использования мессенджера в террористических и экстремистских целях, вербовки граждан для их совершения, продажи наркотиков, а также в связи с размещением противоправной информации». #Viber в реестр ОРИ добавлен только 21 января 2025 года.
Видимо, был добавлен туда принудительно. Например, после игнорирования подряд второго требования добавиться самостоятельно. Т.е. была использована данная норма из-за повторного неисполнения обязанности по представлению в #Роскомнадзор уведомления о начале осуществления деятельности в качестве ОРИ.
Очень может быть, что по ряду политизированных соображений #Viber просто отказался вести диалог с РКН и потому госрегулятор воспользовался своими полномочиями, предусмотренными на подобные случаи. Однако, штрафов на Viber не накладывалось?
#Cloudflare дважды не исполнила обязанность по уведомлению РКН о начале деятельности в качестве ОРИ, назначены штрафы в размере 100 тысяч рублей и 1 млн рублей. 19 февраля 2025 года принудительно включена в реестр ОРИ
Утверждается, что в 2023 и 2024 году Роскомнадзор на основании обращений ФСБ России направил в адрес иностранной компании Cloudflare, Inc. требования о необходимости уведомить ведомство о начале осуществления деятельности в качестве #ОРИ.
В соответствии с постановлением правительства № 1824 (от 12 ноября 2020) года РКН действовал исходя из обращения федерального органа власти (исполнительной), осуществляющего оперативно-розыскную деятельность или обеспечение госбезопасности.

Что это означает?
Включённые в реестр ОРИ обязаны хранить переписку российских пользователей в течение полугода и передавать их по запросу правоохранительных органов. Причём, согласно есть уточнение — хранить на территории России в течение шести месяцев и сообщения пользователей и информацию о мета-данные. Не просто предоставлять в силовые органы, но и установить оборудование для обеспечения удалённого доступа ФСБ к информации о пользователях и их действиях (СОРМ).
Что замечательного?
А значит, если что-то из софта или сервисов блокируют на ТСПУ, то этот кто-то наверняка есть в ОРИ и отказался сотрудничать, выдавая сообщения и мета-данные, а предоставлять сведения о действиях пользователей.
Есть ещё вариант, что включённый в ОРИ может некоторое время не подвергаться блокировкам, но это не будет длиться долго.
Тот же #WhatsApp или уже сотрудничает по всем этим составляющим или же будет вот-вот заблокирован.
И ясно, почему и зачем блокируются мессенджеры, которыми по стране пользовалось полтора гика, но при этом не трогаются такие как Skype и WhatsApp.

NGL As an early adopter I've gone through the full hype cycle with #Beeper messaging on #Android (*ahem iMessage*) but ever since it was acquired by @photomatt it's been firing on all cylinders and has become my default #chat app on desktop and mobile. It's like a modern day #Trillian or #Adium for #RCS, #SMS, #Whatsapp, #Signal, #Messenger, and more. Keep up the great work!
I bet most people have never seen #emojis with sound. This is what it was like back in the day. There app called #Trillian, here you sent or received a laughing emoji, you would hear a laughing sound, and it was so lively. Some other emojis also had sounds, but not all. I only remember a monkey.
#Apple is trying to make emoji cool with #animoji and a bigger emoji library. But they never paid attention to the fact that they could have #sound.
Putting a bunch of bridges into Matrix to try and centralize my messaging is really giving me Trillian/Pidgin vibes. :neofox_what: Except Trillian/Pidgin were way more straightforward (no shade to Matrix, it's not really what it's meant for).
It's depressing thinking back to when XMPP was super promising and companies were on board to implement it. Instead of that happening, they all teamed up to crush it and messaging has stayed the same level of fragmentation (or, depending on how you look at it, gotten worse) in the meantime.

Whatever happened to Trillian messenger?
Looks like they're now just a centralised messaging solution of their own but they used to be a killer multiservice chat client, perhaps the best joining MSN Messenger, ICQ, Yahoo IM, AOL IM, etc, into one client.

@m_artigiani Personally, it's not that it's being explained poorly, rather, people are too used to siloed / closed-garden #SNS that they find it hard to get their heads around it.
For example, in the #messenger / #InstantMessenger space, we've had #federation since the late 90s, thanks to #XMPP (formerly known as #Jabber). We didn't encounter this issue, people simply understood it like how people understood email.
Then later, there's #Matrix, which is also a federation. But I haven't heard anyone ask or got confused how it works.
In a way, I would say #Trillian, #PsiIM, #Gajim, and the interoperability of #ICQ and #AIM played a role there.
However, when it comes to SNS, majority of people were never exposed to interoperable SNS. Since #Friendster #MySpace #Hi5 came out, there never was a federated SNS until 2008 when the #Fediverse was born (then called #Identiverse).
The #ATproto / #BlueSky federation is coming in 2024, so we'll see if they'll encounter the same challenges in explaining instances. If they do, or do not (as the BlueSky team are saying they won't have that issue), then we'll know better since we'll have a comparison by then.
For me, I think we've done everything that we can to explain it.

I was recently thinking about the app #Trillian again. (My thought process: I'd love an app that just lets me see all my chats in one place. Wait, I *had* that twenty years ago!) I wondered what became of it and to my surprise it still exists! They managed to monetize by specialising in secure healthcare communication, so medical organisations can use them for HIPAA-compliant comms. But they also still have the free app that combines all your #messenger apps! https://trillian.im/
Yes I know #Trillian still exists, but I stopped using it over a decade ago.
The whole discourse about differing 'microblogging' sites, reminds me of the Instant messaging war.
Where different platforms kept adjusting their API to not be compatible.
Personally I was delighted to discover #Trillian back in the day, as I could be logged in to ICQ, MSM, AIM, Yahoo chat and IRC all via the one client.
I wonder if we will see something like that again.

I spent some time today trying to find out if there are still all-in-one messenger apps, and specifically one for #iOS. I'm tired of having so many messenger apps because everyone wants to use something different. It looks like it doesn't exist.
Even #Trillian and #ICQ are single purpose now. I'm about to just go back to basic text messaging.
