Just finished #SaturationPoint by #AdrianTchaikovsky, and it one of the weakest of his 1000s of stories, but still more thought-provoking and entertaining than most of the #SciFi out there.
It is a short little novella (the audiobook is only 4.75 hours long) that mashes up #MinistryForTheFuture, #Annihilation, and #TheIslandOfDrMoreau, in that a mad scientist is living in an uninhabitable equatorial zone where the wet-bulb temperature will quickly kill you.
I'm audio listening to #KimStanleyRobinson's #MinistryForTheFuture while I do housework, and it's like a gut punch.
Everything he was writing about 6-7 years ago is now happening in real time - the first chapters with the heat wave in India were what I was listening to when the news of Delhi breaking 52 C came through.
Prescient.

@hermannus @gwagner 31C wet-bulb temperature in some areas when I checked, which is very hazardous but not quite immediately fatal. Maybe next year (I think the #MinistryfortheFuture is founded in 2025 #kimstanleyrobinson)

Sadly here is a #MinistryForTheFuture related news item. The first chapter of the book is an account of an extreme #heatwave in #India that causes millions of deaths. Sadly, I think we will see something similar in India or South America very soon. Temperatures have reached over 50C in parts of India in recent days and there are now water shortages in Delhi. I've been reading #MinistryForTheFuture by #KimStanleyRobison & it's a strange mix of optimism & pessimism about #ClimateChange.
Optimism that we can do so much to stop, even reverse, the damage.
Pessimism that we won't until millions, have paid with their lives.

That's not my criticism, though! I expect #sciFi to provide signposts and narratives about the future, not blueprints.
"The Ministry..." refuses to acknowledge / imagine any kind of agency from the #globalSouth . That is not technology. That's a political stance.
I'm surprised that after reviewing #kimStanleyRobinson 's #ministryForTheFuture a lot of readers accuse me of lying about the first chapter.
They do not remember Frank actively withholding water from a dying man, despite having buckets of it in the fridge. The man died, as a lot of others that trusted Frank to help them.
In my review, I called it "stealing (or rather: intentionally withholding)" - specifically to put a lot of emphasis on something people usually gloss over.
