In The Economic Impact of Brexit (#NBER Working Paper 34459), Nicholas Bloom, Philip Bunn, Paul Mizen, Pawel Smietanka, and Gregory Thwaites estimate that by 2025, the process had reduced UK GDP per capita by 6 to 8 percent, investment by 12 to 18 percent, employment by 3 to 4 percent, and productivity by 3 to 4 percent. These effects grew gradually over time.

Time series diagram titled 'Economic Impact of Brexit'. Two series are plotted from 2016 to 2025, both starting at 0% GDP difference relative to a no-Brexit counterfactual. One, 'UK relative to other countries', falls by 8% to 2025; the other, 'UK firms with high EU exposure relative to UK firms with low exposure' falls by 6% to 2024, following a similar trend.

Hey folks! I am trying to locate an #NBER paper on the productivity of Silicon Valley workers (e.g., how much each SV worker contributes to their employer's bottom line). I know it exists, I just can't locate it. Any help very appreciated.

From tariffs to visa curbs, Trump’s US has been closing its doors to goods and people, all in the name of 'making America great again'. But a new NBER paper by @econgaurav shows that US growth has long been powered by Asian immigrants. Today's Number Theory explores this.

The A that made America great

By Sreedev Krishnakumar

From tariffs to curbs on H-1B visas, the US under Donald Trump has been closing its doors to movement of goods and people. All of this, Trump and his supporters claim, is towards the goal of Making America Great Again or MAGA. While the ill-effects of tariffs on the US economy have been highlighted by many economists and institutions, a recent National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) working paper by @econgaurav shows that the American skilled work force has gained a lot from Asian immigrants and this process is inseparable from the American growth story as well as positive spill-overs in countries which sent such migrants.

"at the industry level, higher were associated with reduced labor , greater total output, more establishments, and more workers. ... lower output per establishment, suggesting that higher tariffs led to the entry of smaller, less productive firms. ... These methods reveal some evidence ... that industries comprised of politically influential firms were more successful in for tariff increases."

This 27 page NBER report from Sept. 2024 is a lot more informative on the potential impacts of AI on the economy
than the 2 page one from CRS that came out recently. Since the Industrial Revolution production output in advanced countries has grown about 20-fold, driven by comparatively rapid technological advances.

"The Impact of a Boston Desegregation Busing Program on Student Outcomes"

"The Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO) program in Boston is a voluntary program for urban students and suburban school districts, that busses non-White students from Boston to wealthier, Whiter suburbs.

"Elizabeth Setren examines how participation in the METCO program affected students over the period 1991 through 2020.

"METCO students attend schools where a much higher percentage of the students plan to go to a four-year college than in the Boston public school system..

"Boston students who are bused to suburban school districts through the METCO school desegregation program have stronger academic and labor market outcomes than similar students who apply to be bussed but are not selected..

"At age 35, on average, students who were selected to participate in the METCO program make $16,250 more than those who applied to the program but were not selected from the waitlist."
