Peter Obi salutes Oluremi Tinubu’s birthday wish—then drops a hard truth. Why should a nation fund its National Library with birthday gifts? Minds lift a land, not jets.

The National Library of Finland (my employer, part of the University of Helsinki) started a Mastodon instance at some.kansalliskirjasto.fi . There are two active accounts for services provided by the library: @Finto and @julkaisuarkistot .

This is an experiment; other services may follow. There is no "main" account for the library itself.

In parallel, the National Library has also created an account on Bluesky: @kansalliskirjasto.fi .

#intro #introduction I'm #TuomasPalonen Helsinki-based #musician, writer etc. I do one project/album/style at a time with my label #Palatsi acting as a metaproject. Most recent album is Thomas Ignatius, #medieval music with an 80s #synthesizer bringing "a tasty retro-futuristic incongruity" as put by #Wiremagazine. I am also a #nonfiction writer with a book on #etymology released in 2025 by #SKSKirjat. At daytime I work at the #NationalLibrary of Finland on subject headings, metadata etc.

In Dec last year, the #SustainableDSE Network at the #UniOslo had the pleasure of inviting Katy Boss from the #NationalLibrary to give a talk on preserving dynamic websites for scholarly edition projects.
Katy wrote a blog post on our weblog, dsenetwork.hypotheses.org/665, introducing #ReproZipWeb, a new tool for preserving and archiving websites.
📣 If you are in #Oslo on March 10th, Katy will give another talk on #reproducibility for #DigitalProjects. More info & sign-up ub.uio.no/english/libraries/ds

Stockton, Calif. Apr. 1942. So-called "stoop" laborers weeding a celery field. Many persons of Japanese ancestry worked at this type of field labor before they were evacuated from military areas and housed in War Relocation Authority centers for the duration

The image depicts a historical moment during World War II, specifically in Stockton, California, in April 1942. It shows two individuals identified as "stoop" laborers weeding a celery field. These workers were part of the Japanese American community who had been evacuated from military areas prior to being housed at war relocation centers for an extended period.

The photograph was taken by Dorothea Lange, known for her work with the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and later as Director of Photography for Migrant Mother during the Great Depression. This particular image is part of a collection in The Hague's National Library, referencing its original file source within the U.S. War Relocation Authority.

The black-and-white photo captures two individuals bent over as they tend to their fieldwork. Both are wearing wide-brimmed hats and light-colored clothing suitable for outdoor labor. In the background, there is a vague suggestion of farm machinery or equipment, hinting at an industrial agricultural setting. The text on the image provides context about Japanese ancestry working in this type of labor before being evacuated from military areas.

Overall, the photograph serves as both a historical document and a poignant reminder of the experiences faced by people of Japanese descent during wartime internment policies in America.
