Uranus's moons are darkened on one side, Hubble reveals Scientists expected that the trailing side of Uranus's moons would be darkened by radiation. When we looked, we found they're the brightest hemispheres of all. We think we know why! bigthink.com/starts-with-... #space #planets #astronomy

Sandy Skies and Baby Moons: Webb Catches Giant Planets in Mid-Birth

scitechdaily.com/sandy-skies-a

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, scientists have directly imaged two massive, youthful exoplanets in the YSES-1 system—revealing silicate clouds, a moon-forming disk, and some of the most detailed exoplanet atmospheres ever studied. The findings challenge current planet formation theories and give us a rare glimpse at how gas giants lik…

This Giant Planet Shouldn’t Exist – But Astronomers Just Found It Around a Tiny Star

scitechdaily.com/this-giant-pl

A tiny star just one-fifth the mass of our Sun has shocked astronomers by hosting a gas giant planet, TOI-6894b—something long thought nearly impossible. The find, made through TESS data and confirmed by one of the world’s largest telescopes, challenges leading theories of planet formation. Discovery of a Planet Around a Tin…

Happy Space Science Saturday!
Experience the Strawberry Moon on June 11! This Full Moon does not get its name from its hue or appearance but from the Native American Algonquian tribes as well as the Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota who would harvest their ripened strawberry crop around this time of year.

Planets similar in size are often dissimilar in interior: arxiv.org/abs/2506.05089 -> "For small neighbouring #planets with similar radii, we show that their masses and interior structures are often disparate, indicating that even within the same system, similarity in radii is not necessarily a good proxy for similarity in composition or the physical nature of the planets."

Did you see the Transit of Venus on this day back in 2012? Members of my local astronomy group captured the event, as highlighted in this collection of photos - rascvic.zenfolio.com/tov2012

Hello #FediScience, migrating from astrodon.social (about to close), I am joining you here (inspired by @wolfgangcramer), so it's time for a new #Introduction

I'm Alexandre Santerne (call me Alex), #astronomer working @LAM_Marseille & teaching at Aix-Marseille #University (France).

I'm expert in finding #NoPlanetB 😀 (#planets around other #stars).

I want to work in a #fair, #inclusive, and #sustainable #research #environment, so I (try to) act accordingly. I'm a member of @labos1point5

I toot a lot about #Astronomy, #Astrophysics, #Space but also a lot about #ClimateChange and #Climate.

Since 2019, I completely boycott planes, and I travel by #train (long distance) and #bike (short distance) as much as I can.

My other interests include #photography (visit my Flickr gallery in my profile) #Astronomy #Space

Oh, in case you don't know where Aix-Marseille is (trick: in 🇫🇷 ), the image below (credit: #NASA / JPL-Caltech / Space Science Institute) is indicating where I am, as seen from #Saturn...

... and where you also are, together with 8B people as part of 2M species 😀

This rare image taken on July 19, 2013, by NASA's Cassini spacecraft has shows Saturn's rings and our planet Earth and its moon in the same frame. At the time, Cassini was 2013 from a distance of about 898.414 million miles (1.445858 billion kilometers) from Earth. It is only one footprint in a mosaic of 33 footprints covering the entire Saturn ring system (including Saturn itself) taken by Cassini's wide-angle camera.
