I think this a bristly rose sawfly (Cladius pectinicornis), a gregarious defoliator introduced from Europe. Can also be reared on strawberry so I might try maturing some to adulthood on potted, netted plants. There are monsters around! With my luck re pests in my plant nursery this year (still fighting the fungus gnats infestation with SP nematodes, sea algae soaks, fans, UV "mosquito lamp" and lots and lots of sticky tape) this #CraneFly is most likely one of the #Tipulidae that are considered pests in Europe (is it Tipula paludosa?) as their larvae attack seedling roots and stems. Which is exactly what fungus gnat larvae were doing already so... [insert random profanities].
About photos, pardon the odd colours as this crane fly thought to rest under my full-spectrum LEDs on a chili plant and it's being illuminated by, well, all colours of the rainbow really.

For the last 3 weeks a pigeon has come down with magpies & other birds for bits of food I leave out for them, then it was 2 pigeons, then 3, 7, 14.. they hoover up ALL the food in about 3 seconds flat & the other birds now get none, they're stinking up the place, I've stopped feeding them all but found out the guy in unit above is feeding them, my doorstep is getting coated in pigeon crap!!

Respecting the earwig nuisance, the director of the #Cawthron Institute wrote to the last meeting of the #Kaikoura County Council as follows:—Referring to inquiry re earwigs, which infest the shingly ground near the sea, the insect was a native of New Zealand, and the institute knows of no method of dealing with it except by means of poisoned bait. The insects are partial to slices of apple, which, if peppered with arsenate of lead, would kill them. The director knows of no instance where earwigs had been imported from other countries as enemies of other pests.
