I think that short of a complete revolution on at least a continent wide scale, there is little any government in the UK can do to deal with the disaster that was austerity. You can't socialise assets or print money, whatever the underlying economic rationale, without being smashed politically and economically. Just look at what happened to Syriza in Greece. You are not going to get continent wide support for that sort of programme quickly.

What you can do is return power to local authorities and reform Parliament. Handing more power to communities and individuals will both allow better solutions to individuals' problems. Local communities will better and more efficiently develop themselves and people will be more satisfied with their lives if they have more power over what is happening.

In short, if I was in charge of the Labour party, I would reverse both the Cameron and Thatcher destruction of local democracy. I would put my limited resources into funding local authorities. I would end the national curriculum and give the councils control of education, similarly with health, housing, transport and social care. I think that this would be an exciting and effective political project. It is not going to happen because they are a bunch of power hungry authoritarians.
