This modular Linux device is an open source handheld with a 4.1 inch display

A small team of developers is building a pocket-sized, modular computer with a 4.1 inch, 1080 x 480 pixel touchscreen display, an an STM32MP157 dual-core Arm Cortex-A7 processor, and 4GB of DDR3 memory.

At a time when high-end smartphones have the kind of processing power you’d expect from a decent laptop, the the “Linux Platform Kit” may not be the most powerful device you can fit in your […]

I'm pondering design for a super minimal #pocketComputer, not a phone replacement but rather a device tailored to do only what's useful to me not distracting, basically what do i need on an average day out when i don't want to be stuck in my phone?

Ideally i could make this modifiable in a way that anyone could tailor it to their own needs and make one, so:

If you had to choose 4 essential features to leave your phone at home, what would they be?

My 4 essential features: Secure messaging (matrix), maps, reminders, music (mp3)Some visual inspiration: Beepberry custom pocket computer with a physical qwerty keyboard, monochrome non-backlit lcd screen and a matte grey 3d printed casing

There's an ebay guy that sells scans of technical manuals. He had the PC4 Sevice Manual. So I got a copy.

Not a lot to the manual, these things weren't really going to be repairable with 198X equipment.

This manual also covers the matching cassette interface, though, and I was interested in that.

Hoped the interface was just some caps and resistors, but nope there's a whole IO chip in there. Outputs Kansas City format tape!

Pocket Z project aims to build $99 Linux PCs that fit in your pocket

Before smartphones with touchscreen displays began to dominate the mobile computing space, device makers tried out a number of different form factors to see what would stick. There were stylus-driven devices like the Apple Newton and Palm Pilot, thumb keyboard devices like the BlackBerry line of phones, and mini-laptops like the Psion Series 5mx and HP Jornada […]

So this is a real oddball of a system. I got it cheap on eBay because I was curious. Before buying it I hadn't been able to find anything about it. After getting it and taking it apart I found it was a modified Casio PB-1000. It _sort of_ worked but had random characters on screen and gave memory errors.

Raspberry Pi-powered ShaRPiKeebo pocket computer is almost ready to ship (two years after crowdfunding)

The ShaRPiKeebo is a pocket-sized computer board with a display, keyboard, game controller keys, and an incredibly geeky design: it’s basically a printed circuit board with tacked-on keys, ports, and buttons. And the board is meant to be powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero, which acts as the brains of the portable computer kit.
When the developers behind the […]

I was wondering old dot matrix LCD displays still exist... I mean the ones we had in old #pocketcomputer s. I'd love to experiment a #lowres interface with the #raspberry #pi4 .
320x200 with backlit would be nice for my next cyberdeck iteration ♥️

Funny thing: If you search for the hashtag here you‘ll get tons of posts with wristwatch images and a very few images of Casio musical instruments, mostly keyboards. – Hey, community! Where are all the cool Casio and photos?!? 😉 I‘ll start with a few from my little collection. – What‘s your favorite Casio pocket computer or calculator?
