#cyberdeck

@flwwhtrbt i doubt I’ll ever get around to building one, but I’ve been obsessed with watching #cyberdeck to see what other people come up with

Inspired by this, I think I'll add a cheap ($15) GPS receiver to the #cyberdeck project.

I already have an SDR dongle, so maybe I'll throw that in as well.

Slowly but surely, I'm adding features. Maybe I'll end up with something equivalent to a cell phone, but worse in every way. What fun!

Here's another form factor I wish still existed: #slabtops. Instead we have tablets.

A #cyberdeck is an homage to these systems. Imagine one of these with an e-ink screen and a Thinkpad keyboard.

A charcoal grey slabtop with a full width letterbox LCD screen. The square keyboard keys (which look pretty decent) fill the case from edge to edge. There's no numpad nor function key row.

Cambridge Computer Ltd Z88 - 1987
Shortly after selling his entire computer range and "Sinclair" brand to Alan Sugar's company Amstrad, Sir Clive Sinclair produced his last computer, the Z88. This portable computer used a lower power version of the popular Zilog Z80 microprocessor. The membrane keyword [sic] is almost silent in use and optional "click" sounds can be enabled to indicate keystrokes.A charcoal-coloured plastic slab with a postcard-sized LCD screen. The circular grey keyboard and numpad keys resemble those on the Sinclair QL, or some of Olivetti's virtuoso designs.

The copy from the explanatory label:

Workslate WK-100 - 1983

Created by Convergent Technologies of Santa Clara, California, this was a portable spreadsheet device with 16KB of RAM, allowing for a 720-cell spreadsheet to be filled. The built in tape drive could record or playback data or voice annotations. A commercial failure, only 5,000 systems of the planned 200,000 were sold.

Lilbits: Retro gaming hardware, another BlackBerry clone, and a DIY UMPC with an E Ink color display

The Onyx BOOX Poke 2 Color was one of the first eBook readers to ship with a color E Ink display. And while it’s designed for reading eBooks, periodicals, and comics, it’s basically a tablet with a sunlight readable display (with a slow refresh rate) and a relatively sluggish processor: but thanks to its Android-based operating system you can install plenty of third-party apps.

So why not […]

I finally have my first #cyberdeck and it's not beautiful, but it works.

It's still amazing to me the original conception of the cyberdeck as a collection of cast off parts just isn't practical.

Everything pictured is somehow a bit special. Both screens are sourced from China, and together cost more than a cheap laptop.

The only thing cast off in any sense is the dell wyse 3040 thin client running it.

The knockoff of the pelican case cost more than a used chromebook.

Still a fun project.

once again thinking about the #cyberdeck i wanna make

still looking for a suitable main board, ideally would scavenge one but also need it to be easy enough to mess with since im no pro

Still from an anime i dont know the name of, character sitting on a pile of parts typing on a flat computer, with parts and cables strewn all aroundSONY DD-MR10 mini computer pda looking thing with a black and white lcd screenCyberdeck on a desk, consisting of a blue pelican case with a screen displaying a pug haphazardly glued into place, and on the bottom half a mini keyboard also glued on with the gaps filled in by white panelling with hand drawings on itCyberdeck built by user var_x consisting of a wooden box with all the components placed or strapped in place with no covering, wires crossing every part of it

The other day I posted about how technology design is boring now, just a slab with a screen.

This morning I stumbled across #cyberdeck and #writedeck projects and they look amazing! Some are so sleek they could be commercial products, some are literally held together with electrical tape.

I even saw one with a beautiful hand-made wooden case, switches instead of buttons and an actual key to turn it on!

I'm not very engineering-minded so not sure I could do it myself, but it's nice to see people still care. Combine it with #cassettefuturism and you're onto a winner I reckon.

Following the failure of my project, I decided to extract the 3d-printed, hand-wired mechanical keyboard I hand wired and turn it into a standalone jobby. Here’s some before, during and after shots. Just waiting on the USB-C breakout so I can have the cable come from a more sensible direction.

My most recent project - and it's a pretty dumb project which I am not qualified to do - is to create a sort of off-grid portable, protected, and solar-charged computer for when Everything Goes To Hell. A #cyberdeck of sorts.

So I've been salvaging parts, trying to find a large battery which can supply enough power for a small SBC with a screen and keyboard, be charged while supplying power, and so on.

Last night I hooked up the battery to the small computer, added the peripherals, and everything seems to be able to run off the battery even while it's plugged in.

So that's nice!

I also eventually want to add a LoRa-module running #meshtastic to it, for encrypted long distance text messaging. But that's a phase 2 thing for sure, need to figure out the basics first.

Rebuilt the for my project today. I had forgotten to allow for a 2u space bar and the extra row of “media keys” was really not needed and just took up too much space. Hopefully tomorrow I will get the area at the top sorted out which will include the usb ports and the ethernet (plus the Pico which will be visible because I’m

@grimmware: Now that is a cool #MNTPocketReform based #Cyberdeck!

2025-05-05

Progress with the #cyberdeck continues.

Somehow I forgot that Elecrow ships from China and purchased a 1920x480 ultrawide screen on April 20th. Remarkably, they shipped it and it was in the US on the 23rd.

I have attached it to a Wyse 3040 and it seems to work fine once I found the right config settings to rotate the screen in Sway.

Aside from the screen, the other item I purchased was an MC Saite USB mini keyboard. It's a shame there's a whole column of keys not working though.

Lilbits: A cyberdeck with a 2 inch CRT display, a 25.3 inch E Ink monitor, and the final nail in the coffin for LG’s smartphones

Cyberdecks are portable computers that often have a retro-futuristic design. Often that’s achieved by hobbyists who combine modern hardware (like a Raspberry Pi or a similar single-board computer) with vintage tech.

But one of the coolest… and possibly most useless cyberdeck’s I’ve seen so far takes things to another level by fusing a 2 inch black and white CRT display from 1980s-era Sony […]

This cyberdeck is a tiny PC that combines a Raspberry Pi 3b+ with a thumb keyboard, touchpad, battery and... a 2 inch black and white CRT display taken from a vintage Sony Watchman. It looks barely usable, but still kind of incredible. old.reddit.com/r/cyberDeck/com #SonyWatchman #RaspberryPi #CyberDeck #CRTDisplay
