I think my Fedi-supporters here will be delighted to read that following my online interview on Tuesday, I was invited to a final on-site round of interviews as one of three candidates!
Not sure which emoji is suitable to describe how I feel about that?!

My interview is tomorrow morning :blobcat0_0:
I have a nice presentation and prepared notes for the discussion.. Any last advice for a first (assistant) professorship interview?

I recently met somebody actually working for #MDPI and before figuring that out, I was tricked by their partner into insult #MDPIgarbage.
Long story short, I consoled them that at least they weren't working for #Elsevier.
But they seemed really nice and extremely unhappy to be stuck with a terrible employer due to economic circumstances.
Spent my day ranting on Mastodon and helping teach applied statistics with #rstats to first year students.
I consider that a day well spent.
It's only shortly past 8 in the morning, but I need to #vent.
I just overheard a new #tenure track assistant #professor talk about how they got there.
In a nutshell, they haven't left the department since their master studies and stumbled into the tenure process by accident.
I am (kinda) happy for them, but I am also so incredibly fucking jealous!
I have switched not only university but country after every degree/job, so by now I live in country number 5 since starting by studies.
The longest I've been in the same country was during my #PhD plus pandemic and unemployment for over a year.
Especially older #academics don't seem to understand this, because whenever I mention any of this I encounter completely blank stares. Note, I'm in a department where most senior staff is local and celebrating 15-35+ years at the same employer.
I'm in my mid-30, I don't want to move every few years when my temporary contract ends.
I want to be able to plan more than 1-2 years at a time.
I absolutely love doing #research, but I hate so many aspects of #academic culture or what has been normalized over the years for #AcademicLife.
I plan on staying in #academia despite of it.
#Rant over, time to calm down and sip my tea.

I feel a bit out of the loop with hashtags at the moment.
Could someone enlighten me what the current general purpose and biology/animal science specific academic hashtags are?
Since guppee shut down, my feed feels quite empty.
And it took me far too long to even notice that 😅

People should keep their eye on the recent US federal executive orders on H1B visas. It's not clear exactly what is happening, who it will apply to, or whether it is even legal for them to do it, but there is a new executive order to start charging $100,000 annually for someone to be on an H1B visa. Presumably paid for by the employer. This is a developing story and will likely change as you read this, but... FYI.

It's my last working day before the summer holidays and I have survived 6/7 meetings. Only one more to go!!!!!!!! 🧳 🏝️ #PostDocLife
As fellow players of wooden wind instruments will know, we have to regularly oil our instruments to avoid cracks. The problem is that they need to be completely dry before you oil them and then they need to dry out for another few days, which means that you can’t play them for about a week in total. As a result, I don’t do it anywhere near as often as I should… But now I have found a solution to this problem: academic conference season! #PostDocLife #EarlyMusic
In the last few months, I have felt #overwhelmed, #overworked, #anxious, behind and planless. But, couple of days ago I stopped drinking big mugs of #blacktea daily. I think I am doing better. More sleepy during the day, sure. Bursty work efficiency, deep work and flow, but that's as usual. Quick googling suggests there isn't a link between #caffeine and #anxiety though, so may be #confirmationbias. #astrodon #postdoclife #publishandperish
Spent hours trying to figure out how to split one LateX document into two, including the literature list, line numbers and references between the two files, to satisfy the conditions of the journal.
The journal, in the submission process: "Now that you have uploaded all your files, select an order to merge all of them into a single file to send to referees".

"For decades, trying to compete with American institutions and companies has been difficult. The United States was a magnet for top researchers, scientists and academics. In general, budgets were bigger, pay was bigger, labs and equipment were bigger. So were ambitions."

Roadwork! Heute erstmals in diesem Jahr die größere bergab-bergwiederrauf Sommerrunde. Nicht länger, aber durchaus anstrengender als die flachen Winterrunden…
