#PredatoryJournals

The review was surprisingly quick with 6 weeks. Surprisingly, the two reviewers remarked practically nothing and had no further questions, but emphasized the suitability of the topic and our rigorous methods for the journal. First I was rather sceptical of this review, as it had vibes of #predatoryJournals. But then again I really poured a lot of work and fine-tuning into this particular article to make it consistent. And PLOS journals appear pretty non-predatory.¹

A 4 panel comic by AfterDeathComics https://www.patreon.com/c/afterdeathcomics
Panel 1: A man at a counter speaks to a woman holding out some money, "Congratulations! Your article has been accepted into our scientific journal. That'll be $5000."
Panel 2: The man holds up a journal and continues, "Ooohhh, your article is so good, for an extra fee we can put it on the cover of the journal". The woman drops more money on the counter, looking quite annoyed.
Panel 3: The woman asks, "Can you mail me a copy when it comes out?" and the man replies, looking perplexed, "What? No! We phased that out long ago, too expensive"
Panel 4: The man points at the woman and remarks, "By the way if you want access to your article online, you'll have to pay", at which the woman throws her hands up (her pockets noticeably empty) and cries out "What do you even do?!"

Predatory journals publishing AI slop in the name of famous academics to confer legitimacy

I find it almost impossible to believe this short article in International Journal of Sociology Civics research was produced by Anthony Giddens and Robert Putnam. Everything about it, from venue through to methodology and style, scream bullshit:

They also have a publication of ‘new’ papers by Zygmunt Bauman, Pierre Bourdieu and Michael Burawoy (all deceased) in 2025. What’s going on here? Is a predatory journal faking authorship, through AI generated papers, in order to confer legitimacy? What’s spectacularly lazy about it is that the papers look nothing like something these authors would write, even if they were alive and interested in publishing in this journal.

Who hasn’t received spam from predatory journals or fake conferences? 🙄 What’s worse, even preprints trigger a flood of “invitations” with fake impact factors and promises of instant review

I usually delete this junk, but my colleague Jaime kept the evidence – and we wrote about this ugly phenomenon of scholarly communication.

@dfg_public

A new study examined how well US university faculty across disciplines know about #PredatoryJournals. The strongest predictor of knowledge wasn’t career length or early-career status - it was the number of articles published in the past 5 years.

:doi: doi.org/10.1002/leap.2020

The authors conclude that professional development on this topic should target not only early-career, but also senior researchers - especially those who rarely publish in journals.

Shaharima Parvin of East West University in Bangladesh presents her experience as a librarian.

"Information wants to be free. It also wants to be expensive" - Stewart Brand, 1984

Trust is at risk, but open access helps promote scholarly communication - however, many senior researchers believe all OA is predatory. Many academics want to publish asap, don't know about indexing, and lack funds.

Think. Check. Submit. helps teach researchers and others to identify predatory and questionable journals. Sofie Wennström presents at our conference in Oslo on how the tips guide authors as an alternative to block lists, allow lists, and the uncritical use of journal metrics. They also help journals ensure they are being and presenting as trustworthy.

Today in #PredatoryPublishing: A predatory journal encouraging me to submit an editorial piece I wrote for *another journal* about being an editor of *that journal*, for publication in their predatory journal.
