A mollusc themed repeat pattern for your nature loving Valentine featuring three of my #linocut heart cockles (Corculum cardissa). Perfect for your favourite malachologist, beach comber or shell collector.

Corculum cardissa, the heart cockle, is a species of marine bivalve mollusc in the family Cardiidae found in the Indo-Pacific. If viewed from the side, it looks like a heart. 🧵

Find it on Spoonflower:

For #printerSolstice2526 prompt division here is my #linocut portrait of Agnes Pockels (1862-1935), the self-taught scientist who pioneered surface science.

As a woman she did not get the chance to go to university & study physics like her theoretical physicist brother Friedrich, who discovered the Pockels effect. So at 18 she took her "passionate interest for natural science" to her household chores &

My Lino block portrait of Agnes Pockels holding her pen and notebook by her trough (which was 70 cm by 5 cm and 2 cm deep, with a ruler along its length and a sliding divider). There is a button attached to an apothecary scale in the through so she can measure surface tension. She has her hair up and wears a dress and a cross on a necklace. She is surrounded by soap bubbles and you can see text in reverse for the Pockels point, 20 angstroms squared. She is in a gradient of dark forest green to lime from the base of the print upwards. The text, bubbles, and swirling patterns in the soap film in the front of her through are in pale pinkish purple.

I made a new linocut! It is inspired by an illustration I made for Climate Illustrated some years ago – some of you might remember it. The illustration shows different »islands of peace«, which are places or things that mean peace to people. This linocut shows the island of nature. Also included in the original illustration are the island of home and the island of family. My plan was actually to carve all three islands in lino to have a small series in the end, but I am not sure yet when I will find the time to do so.

Of this linocut I printed a small edition of 4 prints. Write me a message, if you want one of them. Unfortunately I forgot the name of the paper, but it is a yellowish Japan paper with a cloudy texture. It looks quite nice actually.

2023 I took part in the printing festival "Feste Drucken" again (of course I did, how could I miss that!). One workshop of the festival was about experimenting with gel print – which is a monotype technique using a gelatine plate. If you search online you’ll find plenty of examples, videos and instructions about that technique.

Since then I knew monotype on glass or wood. On a gel plate it is much easier to create imprints of objects or to use stencils. There is no printing press needed and it works well with just acrylic paint (can be the cheapest). The process is very quick and so it is easy to experiment and play around without thinking too much.

The festival’s motto this time was »In between«, and there was a very interesting lecture about white space as a design tool. Inspired by it I used the gel print to experiment with white space, positive and negative forms and transparent colour layers. I mostly used paper snippets that were leftovers, creating these abstract compositions. It was very refreshing and I had a lot of fun.

Unfortunately I only have these low quality photos of the prints. I hope you still get an idea of what they look like.

Hi there.

@Kulturagenten_hamburg initiated a workshop week @goetheschuleharburg this week and i've been there for two days, representing @griffelkunst and the not to be killed genre of printmaking (woodcut of course 🤠).

The so called IVK class (Internationale Vorbereitungsklasse) consisted of around thirteen kids, that are not born in Germany. They're here for less than twelve months and are mostly from areas of conflict, such as Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan and so on.

Some of the kids are able to speak and understand up to five languages which i can't keep up with cause i only speak two. But as you can guess we've had no language in common ;).

However, the nice thing is that printmaking is pretty universal and even if we've had to use our hands and feet (okay okay also some translation apps) to communicate, every kid was able to cut and print almost two prints.

Pretty impressive!

I've managed to snap some pics in between, but there are no action shots of the kids cutting cause it's been pretty turbulent ;).

Interesting side fact:
The "Robust" press pretty much sucked, but it was saved from being thrown away and i guess therefore it was ooookay.

I started working on a new mezzotint. I'm going experimental with this one, and when it's finished I plan to print it in two colors inked simultaneously. We'll see if it works 🤞

Working on my next print for #PrinterSolstice2526 -another scientist portrait for the prompt division. I decided to interpret it like the ‘dividing line’ or interface & highlight the life & work of autodidact Agnes Pockels (1862-1935). Not allowed to attend university as a woman to pursue her interest in physics, she was expected to keep house & care for her ailing parents, so she became fascinated with what was occurring in her soapy dishwater and 🧵

#BlackHistoryMonth is a great time to celebrate mathematician and NASA scientist Katherine Johnson (née Coleman; 1918 – 2020). One of the first Black women employed as a NASA scientist (and its predecessor NACA), she was known for her mastery of complex manual calculations of orbital mechanics and played a pivotal role in the success of the US crewed spaceflights from the beginning.🧵

linocut portrait of Katherine Johnson in a upward gradient of raspberry to purple ink (she is a Black woman in a shirt dress, with pearls, glasses and a watch, holding a pencil, facing left with her arms out on an unseen table like she was writing, looking at the viewer over her right shoulder). Behind her on the right is the Project Mercury rocket with capsule and launch trajectory in black. Beside her on right is the Earth in blue with two images of the Moon in silver above to show the trajectory for the Apollo Lunar Module.

I received a big box of miscellaneous, old dark room/photography material in the mail today (picked it all up for not much more than the cost of shipping). Included are seven small contact printing frames... and one of them still has negatives in it.

At this point, I'm betting the resulting photos would be a tiny bit over exposed. 😂

I'm tempted to leave them in the frame and hang it up as a decoration.

An antique contact printing frame with three negatives and a sheet of photo paper in it. The negatives appear to show a few well-dressed men and women standing in front of a house. The house has a stone foundation. In one photo, one of the women is holding a cat. Based on their style of dress, the images date (probably) from between 1910-1930.

Happy Groundhog Day! I am a fan of the absurdity of weather prognosticating rodents & celebrate Groundhog Day with my thermochromic linocut. The shadow is visible if the ambient temperature is <30°C & disappears when >30°C (and it’s a safe bet winter is over or you are overheating your home). So I argue my print is as dependable as any celebrity rodent! The reaction is reversible so invisible shadows reappear if cooled.

Adding silkscreening into the toolbox has been on my list for a while but the process of burning screens has always been a hurdle with the home studio setup. Using heat transfer vinyl in lieu of emulsion really makes it much more accessible.

This is one of a very small edition of hand-printed aluminum foil lithographic prints of a wolpertinger, a composite creature from German folklore. A mythical deer-hare hybrid, something like a jackalope, often described as a fanged hare with antlers, bird parts (like wings or feet or even beaks) and other small mammal parts like those from a fox, pine marten or, as in this case, a squirrel body. 🧵 minouette.etsy.com/listing/169

Here come some more pics of an older woodcut called "Shadowban".

It's a five colored reduction woodcut print, made from a single block of 8mm thick birch plywood. Edition of eight prints on 200 g/qm Römerturm "Oeuvre", papersize is 50 x 70 cm.

Each print is handnumbered and signed on the front. Please consider that each print is unique and shows different artifacts due to the printing process.

Can be found in my shop of course 🤠.
