So, I guess NovNov is what we are calling the successor to NaNoWriMo...

I was on a cruise for most of the month. But, there are interesting videos and events that were recorded and I am catching up on.

Hopefully I will be able to participate next year. Hopefully it was a success and will return.

Does anyone have any observations or experiences they want to share from this one?

I got the "Locked in Gear" badge for a full week of writing, from ProWritingAid. Here's to more story work! I've got my music going (enjoying this J-rock band I just found through Tiktok called Espirit D'Air), stuffed myself with calories, and I'm here sipping a caffeinated beverage. It's time to dive into this crazy urban fantasy world.

web.archive.org/web/2024090214

What is NaNoWriMo's position on Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
3 days ago Updated
Not yet followed by anyone
NaNoWriMo does not explicitly support any specific approach to writing, nor does it explicitly condemn any approach, including the use of AI. NaNoWriMo's mission is to "provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people use their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page." We fulfill our mission by supporting the humans doing the writing. Please see this related post that speaks to our overall position on nondiscrimination with respect to approaches to creativity, writer's resources, and personal choice.

We also want to be clear in our belief that the categorical condemnation of Artificial Intelligence has classist and ableist undertones, and that questions around the use of AI tie to questions around privilege.Classism. Not all writers have the financial ability to hire humans to help at certain phases of their writing. For some writers, the decision to use AI is a practical, not an ideological, one. The financial ability to engage a human for feedback and review assumes a level of privilege that not all community members possess.
Ableism. Not all brains have same abilities and not all writers function at the same level of education or proficiency in the language in which they are writing. Some brains and ability levels require outside help or accommodations to achieve certain goals. The notion that all writers “should“ be able to perform certain functions independently or is a position that we disagree with wholeheartedly. There is a wealth of reasons why individuals can't "see" the issues in their writing without help.General Access Issues. All of these considerations exist within a larger system in which writers don't always have equal access to resources along the chain. For example, underrepresented minorities are less likely to be offered traditional publishing contracts, which places some, by default, into the indie author space, which inequitably creates upfront cost burdens that authors who do not suffer from systemic discrimination may have to incur.

Beyond that, we see value in sharing resources and information about AI and any emerging technology, issue, or discussion that is relevant to the writing community as a whole. It's healthy for writers to be curious about what's new and forthcoming, and what might impact their career space or their pursuit of the craft. Our events with a connection to AI have been extremely well-attended, further-proof that this programming is serving Wrimos who want to know more. For all of those reasons, we absolutely do not condemn AI, and we recognize and respect writers who believe that AI tools are right for them. We recognize that some members of our community stand staunchly against AI for themselves, and that's perfectly fine. As individuals, we have the freedom to make our own decisions.

On that same idea... While #Grammarly , #ProWritingAid , and other similar grammar software are AI, they are a different kind of #AI . While they do use #GenerativeAI to offer suggestions etc, they do not write the book for you.

In the same way that "All Dalmations are dogs, but not all dogs are Dalmations," it is also accurate to say that "All #GenerativeAI is AI, but not all #AI is Generative."

Grammarly does use AI to assist writers, but it cannot write the book for them. This is why I personally have far fewer ethical issues with such software. Yes, it probably did scrape a library for training, but at least it doesn't allow writers to take credit for the work of a robot.

My writing NEVER features AI. The closest I get is spelling and grammar with and that's it.

I've switched to #ProWritingAid to help me write my stories and posts. I love their line on Sticky Sentences: "Ultimately, you're the writer, so you're the authority. If you don't want to change your sentence, sticky or not, then don't." ✍️ #writer #writing #fiction #nonfiction #writingtips

This year for #NaNoWriMo I have high hopes of finally hitting that 50,000 word goal!

Indeed, I have a feeling I’ll get there the first day.

And if I have time, I may even read whatever bollocks my #LLM churned out to see whose work I plagiarized.

Um die Haltung von #NaNoWriMo zu #GenAI ganz zu verstehen, ist es vielleicht hilfreich zu wissen, das #ProWritingAid, eine AI Firma, Sponsor des Events ist

Oh, no Google what have you done!!! The #ProWritingAid Chrome Extension no longer works based on Chrome updates?!?!? PWA recommends fixes, but when you accept them, the change isn't made (but PWA thinks it was).

Hi Steaphan,

Thanks for your emaill

Unfortunately, changes made by Google have affected how our ProWritingAid add-on and Chrome browser extension behave inside of Google docs, and we are unable to control these changes or the affect they have on our software

We are working towards using our own solution in the future

I am sorry if this is disappointing news!

Best wishes,

Hey SF writers! Have you signed up for the ProWritingAid SF Week Sep 11-14? This will be the 2nd I've attended. I can always find at least a few sessions I want to attend. Sessions range from educational webinars to author interviews. I'm a big fan of continuous learning, and SF Week counts!

A few ideas that could have made most USA authors' Regency fiction better.

I particularly like avoiding current slang/ names/ jargon - if only they would.

I’m going to finish sorting the current two novels then try switching to a different piece of software with integrated editing suite. It might not be as good as #ProWritingAid but it’ll speed up my process.
Used it for a couple of novels in the past and it worked well, but I had to try other systems in case they worked better.
I love #scrivener , but I need to produce finished manuscripts in one run to be fully productive.

@sogerald Your instance is apt. ;) Anyway, not a fan of #Grammarly since it is often wrong but I really enjoy #ProWritingAId which integrates nearly everywhere (Word, Notes (on a Mac), Scrivener, Gmail. (I would not, however, submit long work just using the software. Hire an editor!)

Trying out ProWritingAid Everywhere for Mac and ProWritingAid for Safari. Works great in Apple Notes and Scrivener (yay!) but I can't get it to work in Mastodon on Safari or in the Ivory app on Mac. Works on other websites and apps. Anyone know why this might be? Is there a setting to enable plugins on the server? prowritingaid.com

So, #TIL that #ProWritingAid has a share feature. It's been years since I've used the web interface (usually just open my Scrivener file directly on my local computer.)

So...
I got (read - paid for) #ProWritingAid not long ago to help improve my #writing.
The last update wouldn't work.
After a few emails exchanged with their Help center, I was informed that from the last update, #Win8.1 is not supported anymore.
This information was not available anywhere on their site when I purchased the program. It wasn't there when I downloaded the latest update either.
The information is not on the site at all, not even now. I searched for it.
There is no mention of supported OS versions when trying to purchase the app.
Don't get me wrong - I love the program, it's quite helpful.
But this is bad. This is not how you manage/update/sell a program to customers.
Every self-respecting vendor informs customers well in advance when they stop supporting a specific OS version. And that information is clearly mentioned on their site.
I am disappointed.
Never mind that I paid for a year, and more than half of it I will not get any updates.
Bah.

Guten Morgen vom Küchentisch. Grad die englische #Übersetzung meiner #Schottland-#Kurzgeschichte nochmal mit Hilfe von #ProWritingAid (ausgedehnter Spell- & Grammar Checker) durchgearbeitet.
