Many academic papers could be half as long—or less. But we write them to be self-contained and accessible to a broad scholarly audience, so we repeat background, define well-known terms, pad the argument just to be safe. And then publishers restrict the number of footnotes.

In an ideal world, a paper would be short, dense, even cryptic—and followed by a massive apparatus of notes explaining context, terminology, prior work, alternatives. Instead, we do the opposite: long main text, minimal notes

I'm planning an event on 'The Future of the Doctorate' (will update here asap).

In the meantime, what are your views on its future, given all that's happening?

I've just been gratefully reminded that academic writing can be an act of love, justice, and care, as well as "the very essence of what it means to be human" (p. 265).

I🧡Laurel Richardson's approach to academic writing generally and this, specifically, because of the focus on writer agency, choice, & the complexities of referring to the 'world' (or REALITY).

Language is a constitutive force, creating a particular view of reality and of the Self. Producing “things” always involves value – what to produce, what to name the productions, and what the relationship between the producers and the named things will be. Writing things is no exception. No textual staging is ever innocent (including this one).

Am working with a PhDer keen to create a visual/sensorial #thesis investigating the aesthetics of Pentecostal imagery (Religious Studies). Their supervisors aren't 'keen'.

Any examples/advice I can share with them?

"The paper is reported in line with STROBE guidelines." 😅

You wand to know more about STROBE? Go check it out:
strobe-statement.org/

A flow chart going in six boxes from (top) N=5,234 participants having been approached for participation, down to (bottom) N=362 participants whose data were eventually analysed. Before the bottom box, data of N=218 participants is mentioned to be excluded due to missingness. The top five boxes of the flow and the "missing data branch" are overlaid in grey, indicating that these are not reported in the paper.

@kfnagle
Thanks re . Part of me totally agrees.

a) I have been part of checklist developments and tried to be against items like "strengths", "definite conclusions", "innovation" etc. I have been & am usually overruled. I personally think they should not be part of such lists as they do not increase the quality of reporting.

b) Should we slowly move into a world where it would be fine to write "For reasons x, y, z, "innovation was not the point of the project"? ☺️

Another finished.

Paper ~ 5000 words
Review ~ 1700 words
Duration ~ 1.75 hours

I recently had a discussion with an editorial board whether reporting should be mandatory. The board suggested that this would limit creativity and openness.

Most checklists only say what should be minimally reported and are rarely otherwise normative.

It would have helped this manuscript, so that I would have understood what the authors had done.

Hello @annamills, thank you for your work on #AI literacies, pedagogies, and awareness raising. It's helping me, at least, raise awareness within my own academic writing contexts.

Are you aware of any similar and/or specific work - including your own that I'm not aware of - relating to the use of #LLMs and other #ArtificialIntelligence writing technologies in #DoctoralWriting #DoctoralResearch #ResearchWriting?

Tried to find a GIF to illustrate our latest Stage 1 submission. Funnily enough most of the GIFs seem to imply that the job would actually have been finished with this 😂 😂

While waiting for and editorial decision, you could maybe read the last RR we published about the impact of the pandemic on adolescent

The "Reviewer's guide to " provides a concise summary of what to learn about and how to plan & report studies employing 31 (2nd ed. apparently 35) methods: routledge.com/The-Reviewers-Gu

Since it is a book, it will be difficult for many to get access. Does anyone know whether at least the checklists have been published somewhere ?

And is there a version?

Who else is doing research on artificial intelligence and academic writing that is policy and ethics-oriented?

Please boost, if you can, as I am hoping to reach #interdisciplinary voices & approaches to this, especially from the so-called #GlobalSouth, namely communities that don't seem to be getting much of a look-in right now on this 'western' concocted concern.

Dear #MastodonAcademic, have any you budgeted for *writing time* when applying for research funding? I've never seen a grant bid that does so, which suggests that writing is not recognised as the #MethodOfEnquiry it is and is not accounted for in grant time. For example, budgeting for a #WritingRetreat or a project assistant to ensure grant holders have time to at least draft for the dissemination of their findings would seem reasonable to me but ....?#ResearchWriting #AcWri #HigherEducation

If you had to read a #CaseStudy on how academics (including #DoctoralWriters and #Supervisors) are actually using #ArtificialIntelligence writing tools, what would you like the case study to cover?

Asking as part of ongoing research.

The whole #AI thing is a moving target dictated by non-educational imperatives, so, I'm trying to design a case study that is, to some extent, future-proof.
