Hampton Hawes - Four!

This lively 1958 release finds Hawes (piano) joined by Barney Kessel (guitar), Shelley Manne (drums), and Red Mitchell (bass).

A combo of swing, blues, bop, standards, all well recorded, re-released by Craft with QRP doing the pressing. Not engineered by RvG (Lester Koenig produced, Roy DuNann engineered) so the piano sounds great. ;-)

Hampton Hawes - Four! LP cover.

A lot of exclamation points, with the title in black, and the participants in red. Given the pun, four on a golf course, probably yelling "Fore!"

Hey, look, I just describe them.

The black LP plays on a vintage, restored Bang & Olufsen Beogram 8002 linear-tracking turntable to the right.

Hear Ye! is an album by the Red Mitchell-Harold Land Quintet recorded in 1961 and released on the Atlantic label.

Hear Ye! Review by Scott Yanow

In the early '60s, bassist Red Mitchell and tenor saxophonist Harold Land co-led a quintet in Los Angeles. The group did not catch on but they did record one Atlantic set that has been reissued on CD. In addition to the co-leaders, the quintet included trumpeter Carmell Jones, pianist Frank Strazzeri, and drummer Leon Pettis, and, although their original program of six songs was comprised entirely of group originals, the music falls easily into the hard bop area with plenty of fine solos and swinging ensembles. The CD reissue adds two previously unreleased tracks including a lone standard, "I'm Old Fashioned." This is a fine effort from a group that deserved greater recognition at the time.

Gerry Mulligan, California Concerts, 1955 on Pacific Jazz

Collection of live recordings featuring the Gerry Mulligan Quartet on the A-Side and the Gerry Mulligan Sextet on the B-Side. The quartet here is with Jon Eardley, Red Mitchell, and Chico Hamilton; the sextet with Bob Brookmeyer, Zoot Sims, and Larry Bunker with Eardly and Mitchell.

The A-side was recorded at Stockton High School in November 1954, the B-Side at Hoover High School in San Diego.

My copy is an original mono pressing on Pacific Jazz from 1955, via Crossroads Records in Portland OR. The sleeve is pretty worn, but the vinyl sounds great.

The Modest Jazz Trio - Good Friday Blues

A really nice, previously unavailable/obscure album featuring young Jim Hall (guitar) as the leader, Red Mitchell on piano (even though he usually plays bass), and Red Kelly on bass.

Yes, somehow two Reds. Who’d a thought.

This is a nice set of blues and standards, given a great presentation.

The Modest Jazz Trio - Good Friday Blues LP cover.

A black border on top and bottom. Top has the text of the album, with everything in caps except for “modest” in lower case. Below, on the border, “Pacific Jazz Records”.

In the center is a picture of a shoreline and some seagulls. Some are covered by transparent, teal polygons.

The black LP plays on a vintage, restored Bang & Olufsen Beogram 8002 linear-tracking turntable to the right.
