🎉🎉 The Predictions Scorecard: where Rodney Brooks valiantly attempts to turn his crystal ball-gazing into a thrilling blog post. 🤖🔮 Just because you *can* predict the future doesn't mean you *should*—or that anyone will care! 📅🤣

This is a good read if you're trying to understand the future in autonomous tech and AI. #RodneyBrooks is a pioneer in #robotics and #AI (parent of the roomba among other things) and just an interesting guy. He benchmarks his 2018 predictions against progress at the start of every year. I find the realism and honesty refreshing. That’s not a 100% agree with everything but he‘s thought provoking @rodneyabrooks

“However, #hardware is much harder than #software. Unlike software that runs in a virtual world, the laws of #physics are unforgiving and immutable, and safely interacting with the physical world requires a great deal of #SensoryInput. #RodneyBrooks, who has been working on #robot #manipulation since the 1970s, argues these companies are missing the fundamental ingredient for dexterous manipulation: the *sense of touch*.

These approaches, Brooks argues, ignore decades of research showing that #HumanDexterity depends on an extraordinarily complex touch-sensing system. He cites work from #RolandJohansson's lab at #UmeåUniversity showing that when a person's fingertips are anesthetized, a seven-second task of picking up and lighting a match stretches to nearly 30 seconds of fumbling.”

#RodneyBrooks: Despite significant investment, #humanoidrobots are unlikely to achieve #humanlevel #dexterity in the near future. The manipulation challenge remains a significant #hurdle, with existing #robotichands lacking the robustness, force, and longevity required for real-world applications. Humanoid robots will likely differ significantly from both current designs and human anatomy. rodneybrooks.com/why-todays-hu #tech #media #news

Just Calm Down About GPT-4 Already

“What the large language models are good at is saying what an answer should sound like, which is different from what an answer should be.”

It’s a textbook example of the mixture of amazement and, especially, anxiety that often accompanies a tech triumph.

Interesting take by #rodneybrooks on #chatgpt:

Despite the sometimes astonishing results, it's good to keep in mind that #transformers might just be very good in pretending to be smart.

... they don't have a world model.
... they stumble/ hallucinate in uncharted territory.

However, supervised by a human they will probably become very effective in certain tasks.

I have been "following" Rodney Brooks since "Subsumption Architecture For A Mobile Robot" 1984/85/86. My mobile robots have drawn heavily on that architecture and stayed closer to Braitenberg Vehicles [1984] than to anything that might be mistaken for artificial intelligence. When I saw the intense sensor suite of the car Rodney Brooks was about to enter, twitter.com/rodneyabrooks/stat the thought came to mind "Wouldn't a human driver just be simpler?" #RodneyBrooks #AutonomousVehicles #Robots
