#SNSFDataStories — In autumn 2018, 450 postdocs applied to the #SNSF for a mobility fellowship. What were these researchers doing four years later? 📈

💡A comprehensive study shows that their career paths were very diverse. Nonetheless, the vast majority were still working in #research in 2022.

People in precarious situations don't always have a right to participation and self-determination – this was shown by the National Research Programme “Welfare and Coercion” (NRP 76). The concluding event took place in the presence of Federal Councillor Beat Jans.

Graphical abstract/model-style figure from preprint https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.12.23.521774v2.full, which suggest that not only do our body's defence molecules shape the microbiome... but selection imposed by common microbiome members actually shapes our defence molecules over evolutionary timescales! In revisions now, and looking forward to announcing the final version in a few months (fingers crossed)!Poll from November 2021 asking folks "What is your opinion of _______?" with the four answers listed. Results discussed in http://bit.ly/WhatPredPub

I repeated the poll with a greater diversity of publishers in January 2023, finding similar results across both birdsite and Mastodon. See: http://bit.ly/1yrPredPub

A key goal of these surveys wasn't just to get a snapshot of public opinion. It was to see if any objective metrics (like the ratio of Journal Impact Factor to SciMago Journal Rank) correlated with public opinion. In that way, I was hoping to advance the conversation beyond anecdote and testimony, to bring some objective data to the words "predatory publishing behaviour."

In http://bit.ly/1yrPredPub, I advance the discussion to bring to the fore terms like "Vampire Press", "Vanity Press", "Rent-seekers", or "scams." These are all types of disreputable publisher behaviours associated with the term "Predatory" publishing.A metric for judging publisher behaviour: the ratio of journal Impact Factor (IF) to SciMago Journal Rank (SJR). The higher the ratio, the greater the inflation of IF by the journal; discussed in http://bit.ly/WhatPredPub
The ease that this ratio can be calculated is a great 1st glimpse of what a journal is like if you're approached by them for the first time.

***A ratio of IF/SJR > 4.0 is deemed problematic, and being solicited to publish with or review for such journals should be taken with a grain of salt.***

Journal IF can be inflated relative to SJR due to a couple issues, owing to differences in how the two metrics are generated. These are:

1) High rates of self-citation. Not just authors citing themselves, but journals citing themselves, or others in their close network. Such instances, when coordinated maliciously, are called "citation cartels."

2) Low diversity of citing journals. Just because one might cite onself a bunch, or be cited by a few colleagues, doesn't mean the IF/SJR should be hugely skewed. The only way it is skewed to a problematic degree is if no one else is citing the work. Basically, if you're putting out publications that only get pats on the back from your close network, and no one else.

To get these data for your journal of interest, just search:
"[JOURNAL NAME] impact factor" and "[JOURNAL NAME] scimago journal rank." Easy! Hope it's helpful = DJust a pretty picture of a fruit fly (Drosophila innubila) I took. I like to work with different species to ask questions about immune evolution. This fly is a mushroom-feeding hermit that lives in the south-west USA, up in the mountains.

A painting by Holder showing Lake Geneva and the Alps of Savoy an evening of 1895 from an elevated viewpoint. Colours are intense and the handling of the forms is synthetic and ornamental. The big blue mass of the lake, which asserts the main harmony, is contained within the contour of a broad, clearly drawn ellipse. The upper horizontal band contains the suggestion of a melody, with the staccato of the clouds reflected in the water. Hodler replaces the fleeting character of impressionist painting with a rhythmic organisation capable of revealing the timeless order of nature.
