"The recent book by Marcelo Vieta, Workers’ Self-Management in Argentina: Contesting Neo-liberalism by Occupying Companies, Creating Cooperatives, and Recuperating Autogestion (Haymarket Books, Chicago, 2020), provides a wealth of information and analysis on the emergence of worker-run production cooperatives in Argentina’s crisis-ridden industries. It highlights workers’ prominent role in occupying and self-managing factories that were either shut down or on the brink of closure following the economic crisis of the 1990s. The book also offers fascinating examples of how these worker-managed units were established. Argentina’s labour movement provides valuable lessons for understanding the complexities of workers’ self-management.

To better understand the economic and political conditions that led to these labour movements, it is crucial to briefly consider the historical context of labour organization in Argentina, as discussed in the book and other related sources, particularly its relationship with the state and capitalists. A special focus will be placed on ‘Peronism,’ which significantly shaped labour politics. After that, we will explore some key aspects of the book and conclude with reflections on the concept of workers’ control and its (in-)conceivability under capitalism."

There seems to be a lot of buzzing about a possible upcoming performance of Abdullah Öcalan, imprisoned former leader of the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK). I say 'former', because Öcalan has been in isolation in Imrali prison since 1999. Over the last decade, there has been very limited contact with Öcalan, making it impossible for him to exactly know what the situation of the kursish liberation movement is, let alone the state of the world. The movement and organisation has developed itself and has obviously also had its own leaders in his absense. It is not to disregard his influence (which is difficult to overestimate) but to be realistic.

The people who ran the organisation and have been part of the movement have more or less idealized Öcalan in his absence, with his absence fulfilling the role of a sort of "empty throne". The people have had the chance to develop and experiment along their own ideas and those dropped by Öcalan himself. But stepping away from power is maybe even more difficult than rising to it. So also there, the new developments should be at least followed with a worry eye. It could mean filling of hhe throne which might be exactly is the interest of Turkey, the person knows that throne is namely in their grips.

Decades of isolation are likely also to have very lasting negative effects on a person. Either fysical, psychological but also opportunist-wise (willing to get out of prison is a very human thing). Still it should come to question in how far somebody who has endured so much, would be able to stable and responsibly lead a movement, a movement that actually in theory wants to move away from hierarchical leadership and towards democratic control.

I see a lot of idealizing articles about Öcalan appearing at the moment, also by anarchist comrades who are or have been in Rojava. Please be sensible: in the end it is very well possible the Turkish state maybe didn't killed him, but destroyed him nonetheless; as they did with so many comrades before and after him. He is, after all, just a man of flesh and blood.
