There is something both sad and maddening that most of the cool Vaio models both back then and now cost a nice chunk of change.

But they have the same hardware of netbooks that costs 10% of the price

Like, of course they are rare, for 1k€ what are you gonna buy: a MacBook Air, a normal Windows laptop, or a sub notebook with an Atom CPU

Thinking about selling my Sony Vaio laptop...
It was my first laptop, but it's grown really just out of use for me. It's quite heavy, it doesn't have much benefit in terms of ports or software, the hardware is really out of date for my uses ( The GPU was basically out of date when I bought it 💀 )

It has a FireWire and Sony MagicGate port, but....

My x230 has an Expressport slot. I have a FireWire PCI-E addon card. And generally I only need firewire for DV tape capture (which is very rare for me to do anyway)

And the MagicGate port is only for Memory Stick and Duo cards, which I mean were really only used for older hardware too... but I have a really nice multi-port USB 3.0 device for reading MS/Duo cards...

Also the power port is LITERALLY the most frustrating I've used. I've replaced it three times now:

Wasn't holding the charger properly, so replaced
Got banana mushed into the port, impossible to determine if it was truly clean or not, replaced
goto 1.

I managed to find a replacement for the keyboard on Aliexpress as well (amazingly, last one, EN-US) as some of the keys stopped working following water spilling on the laptop + a year of storage making it work again somehow.

It's probably been close to a year ish of not having used this laptop... but... it feels almost wrong to sell it. it was my first laptop!

Actually honestly this was a mistake to spend as much as I did on this NEW when I bought it so many years ago. Sigh. I doubt anyone would want to buy it even! :(

There was a model variant with a blu-ray drive available, which I HAVE found listings on ebay for the bare drive, but it's close to $100 ish.

Finally managed to get a replacement keyboard for my older Sony VAIO laptop. I had spilt water on it many many years ago, and despite a successful return-to-function, many keys stopped working. No longer!

I LOVE this laptop as a "old-school" workhorse, given it has FireWire, eSATA, and Memory Stick Duo ports. Stable, fast enough, and 8GB of RAM+SSD!

This one has only blurry photos, has no power cable and is untested, so I won it for 6,600 yen. Here's hoping it works!

More retro Sony VAIO tinkering: upgraded the hard drive to an M.SATA SSD, going from 60GB to 128GB in the process. Access to the drive is easy in the VAIO C1MZX. One screw to remove the keyboard and 3 for the drive cage. Bought a 2nd UGREEN USB to IDE/SATA adapter to make the process quicker.

Upgraded drive partitions properties in Windows XP

Recently acquired a Sony VAIO PCGA-JRH1 jog dial controller. The JRH1 is a USB add-on from 2002 which has a rotating dial, LCD screen & audio DAC to connect headphones. It interfaces with the Jog Dial Navigator software to display & control app menus or the currently playing song! Shown with a VAIO C1MSX notebook running SonicStage.
