A new background story on The Silicon Underground focuses on Transmeta's Crusoe CPU, an unusual processor from the early 2000s that competed with Intel with its energy-efficient design and later continued as an IP licence model. In the article, David L. Farquhar traces how Transmeta initially sought to score points in the market for mobile and energy-efficient systems with the Crusoe architecture, but later failed:
Ah, #nostalgia for the days when burning 273 million dollars on a non-dotcom-but-still-dotcom IPO was considered "success." 🤷♂️ Thankfully, Transmeta’s grand plans were so potent they managed to outdo #vaporware with sheer absence! 💸💨

I wounder when all #patents re: #i486 (-64 / #amd64) will (have) lapse(d), because that would make it very interesting for an #FPGA implementation.
Kinda like #Transmeta...

Maybe @landley knows more?

Oh yeah, #Sony and #Compaq made some #Portables that used #Transmeta CPUs...
Personally I am a sucker for recently surplus'd #ThinClients as they offer decent computation for a cheap #NAS whilst being #fanless.
@DosFox it’s Solo, a cancelled Transmeta SoC, which paired a Crusoe with peripherals including a graphics adapter. Alas, before we got it back Microsoft raised the Windows graphics requirements rendering it nonviable. A pair of energetic souls did bring it up to a Windows desktop, but that was the end of Solo. So tragic. (A check from Donald Knuth is photo bombing the corner)
@a1ba unsarcastically, I like that.
But then again I'm a sucker for non-#AMD / #Intel #ix86 / #amd64 #CPU|s and non-#AMD / #Intel / #nvidia / #3dfx (wallet sez so!) #GPU|s.
Like some #Transmeta / #VIA / #Vortex86 / #Cyrix / #Xiaoxin CPU with like a #SiliconMotion / #ASPEED / #Matrox / #S3 GPU added to it.
Won't run Crysis, but will run @OS1337!
The most amusing thing: I do remember someone ranting at #Transmeta “they literally got the book and just implemented that” as a criticism of the original Crusoe VLIW. Now that I’ve seen VEX (“VLIW EXample”) I have to agree, that, yeah, Crusoe was extremely close to that plus extensions for atomic execution. Even the assembly syntax is near-identical. Of course Crusoe (or rather, P95), predates the book by a decade but surely he published most of the material prior to book.
@landley @gettie that being said I've yet to see any competition since #Cyrix got stomped out, #Transmeta failed and #VIA sold parts of #CentaurTechnology to #Zhaoxin which now fab their stuff on 16nm surplus'd #TSMC nodes that were slated for export to MCST but got embargo'd for obvious reasons...
Still, it angers me since @OS1337 aims to be a foundation [to at least be able to recover data or backup/restore ancient hardware one can't get to run elsewhere]…
Another #3dprint case for a HP t5515 thin client #pc with a misspelling in the front and center! Laughing at your own mistakes makes life a little easier 😅 The disk drive and key lock are both fake. The spiral on the top left is the #transmeta Crusoe logo graphic. Good for #RetroGaming using actual hardware thanks to its small size, audio output and compatibility.
@SweetAIBelle Needless to say I'm convinced I can just boot @OS1337 from either a #USB-#Floppy(-#Emulator via USB Adaptor) or regular #flashdrive using #Ventoy, as #ISOLINUX distro...
I'll test it out today...
Luckily I have some "bare metal" to test against:
Sadly I don't have much more "lower end" or "legacy" systems as a significant collection of mine got stolen from storage years ago and I don't have the money flying around to build @rasteri 's #Wee86 / #WeeCee... I was thinking about getting one of those Dell Wyse 3040 which AFAIK come with a #cursed #32bit #UEFI...
Sadly "Potato-level" #Netbooks running #VIA #C7 chips are nowadays rare and absurdly expensive and targeting those would be good as they already get too slow for mainstream 32bit distros like #BunsenLabsLinux so repurposing those as #OS1337 testing machines and target hardware may be a good option...
Tho just clocking down a #ThinClient with VIA Edenwould be sufficient to test out.
One of the machines that stolen from me was a Futro S300 with a #Transmeta CPU that I originally intended to use as #Windows95 box...
@ariadne Eeyuppp!
There's a reason #Transmeta literally did design their chips to emulate #amd64 & #ix86 with an architecture that isn't an #ISA a OS can even directly utilize.
That being said, I'm confident that #ARM / #ARM64 will be a stepping stone till #RISCV is mature enough to become mainstream (i.e. 20 Years) and cheap $10 #FPGAs allow running one at a performance that is on-par to then current #AppleSilicon SoCs and faster than any current-day #AMD64 can be.
@sataa and another ting:
It showcased #FLOSS superiority because #GCC delivered better and more performant results than #Intel's own compiler.
They should've gone the #Transmeta route and decoupled silicon and code for more efficiency and scalability instead.
