I spent a half an hour this morning picking up single use plastic and styrofoam and other materials such as glass and rubber items. I do this once or twice a month on this section of Atlantic shoreline in the Florida Keys. I could have spent 5 hours and still not have gotten it all. Plastic bottles and bottle caps, styrofoam of various sizes, shoes, toothbrushes, rope, hoses etc. Millions of years from now, long after humans have killed themselves off, I hope that Mother Earth may be restored. Yes, ban the plastic garbage bags holding this stuff too.

#California has effectively banned the use of most expanded plastic foam food containers as of January 1. These are, among other things, the ubiquitous cups commonly referred to as "Styrofoam" (although technically a Dupont brand name). The #EPA estimates that less than 1 percent get recycled overall.

On this #earthday, you can start doing your part. Filter your home water and buy glass or metal containers to port it around instead of buying water filled plastic bottles that are barely and rarely recycled. Buy your meat and fish wrapped in paper, not plastic film on a bed of styrofoam. Tell your local restaurant to use the new paper and compostable boxes instead of often black plastic (totally non-recyclable) containers or styrofoam clamshells. The more people that choose, the more the people who want to engage with us change.

#Bola #Edwards’ living room has been transformed into a giant stage. Large #styrofoam #books stand tall while an oversized pencil crafted from plywood balances on a brown wall. The opposite wall is a fuchsia pink. The space looks like a classroom from a child’s whimsical #imagination.
In the middle of the room stands an armchair upholstered in the swirling patterns of African textiles. It is here, at the centre of things, that the fictional grandmother character “Grandma Wura” comes to life, sharing stories with young African minds around the globe.
Ever since the character’s debut in 2015, Grandma Wura has been integral to Edwards’ work with her company, Proud African #Roots.
She founded the #creative #arts company with her husband, Patrick, in 2013, a year after leaving her corporate job. Their mission was to raise a new #generation of African leaders by blending African arts and storytelling with tangible lessons on values and leadership. Their strategy was multifaceted – leveraging stories, #music, and drama to #educate their young audience.
