Hey everyone 👋

I’m diving deeper into running AI models locally—because, let’s be real, the cloud is just someone else’s computer, and I’d rather have full control over my setup. Renting server space is cheap and easy, but it doesn’t give me the hands-on freedom I’m craving.

So, I’m thinking about building my own AI server/workstation! I’ve been eyeing some used ThinkStations (like the P620) or even a server rack, depending on cost and value. But I’d love your advice!

My Goal:
Run larger LLMs locally on a budget-friendly but powerful setup. Since I don’t need gaming features (ray tracing, DLSS, etc.), I’m leaning toward used server GPUs that offer great performance for AI workloads.

Questions for the Community:
1. Does anyone have experience with these GPUs? Which one would you recommend for running larger LLMs locally?
2. Are there other budget-friendly server GPUs I might have missed that are great for AI workloads?
3. Any tips for building a cost-effective AI workstation? (Cooling, power supply, compatibility, etc.)
4. What’s your go-to setup for local AI inference? I’d love to hear about your experiences!

I’m all about balancing cost and performance, so any insights or recommendations are hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance! 🙌

What is the Best used GPU Pick for AI Researchers?
 GPUs I’m Considering:
| GPU Model | VRAM | Pros | Cons/Notes |
| Nvidia Tesla M40 | 24GB GDDR5 | Reliable, less costly than V100 | Older architecture, but solid for budget builds |
| Nvidia Tesla M10 | 32GB (4x 8GB) | High total VRAM, budget-friendly on used market | Split VRAM might limit some workloads |
| AMD Radeon Instinct MI50 | 32GB HBM2 | High bandwidth, strong FP16/FP32, ROCm support | ROCm ecosystem is improving but not as mature as CUDA |
| Nvidia Tesla V100 | 32GB HBM2 | Mature AI hardware, strong Linux/CUDA support | Pricier than M40/M10 but excellent performance |
| Nvidia A40 | 48GB GDDR6 | Huge VRAM, server-grade GPU | Expensive, but future-proof for larger models |

I am very interested in switching off from Apple iPhone and using something different finally.

Do people enjoy Android? What other phones/companies do people enjoy and why? I would like to have more customization, privacy options and support a company that is (hopefully) more ethical.

I am also interested in the Unihertz Jelly Phone which I think runs IOS but isn’t an iPhone.
I also don’t want to buy from Google if I can help it.

Nintendo Switch 2 comes with a built-in protective screen film that should not be removed. Unlike regular screen protectors, this layer helps prevent screen shattering and maintains touch sensitivity. If extra protection is needed, simply apply a third-party screen protector over it never peel the original film.

Hi, Mastodonians. :masto_dance:

Hotmail is really lacking and ticks me off, so I´m thinking about closing the account.

Quick question: What do you think about #thunderbird for email. Do you recommend?? Thanks a lot. 🤔 🤓 #TechAdvice

So I am thinking about launching a #FOSS #searchengine locally. It would cache so when I don't have internet access, I could browse the small web and enjoy great articles. I could also give access to interested friends and family.

Do you have suggestions other than #yacy and #wiby?

Yacy seems better but the search quality is not good. And regarding wiby, it uses #sql for the database :/

Boosts very much appreciated.

PS: The blogs which do #linkdump like @82mhz would be a very good seed. Already roasted meat ready to be served :)

Edit: I thought development of Yacy has stopped. But checking their repo, they are still active:

github.com/yacy

Edit2: On Yacy forum, people complain about bugs and no update. I also have found this: marginalia-search.com/

Is it normal that the USB stick I've bought and is USB 3 has only 10-20 MB/s sequential read?

Edit: I read one byte at a time, does it make a difference?

Edit2: nvm. Of course reading 1B at a time is slow...

Looking for some tech knowledge here.

We are a small company with a Sonicwall firewall. They are currently increasing the annual subscription for it so Im looking at alternatives.

Does anyone have any advice about open source firewalls like pfsense.org/ ?
