Former granary C18 mainly cob walls and thatched roof. First floor with external access via stone steps. Ground floor doorway in end wall and dovecote above. One of only a few examples of this combination of granary and dovecote.

A roof stripped of most of its thatch apart from the ridge, which is everal feet deep. The main area of the roof is covered in a green taupaulin. There is scaffolding at the front of the house from which ladders go across the roof.

A roof devoid of any covering with the original timbers still in place.

Reroofing in progress with new wood over the old.

An update with some work in progress following a fairly brutal storm yesterday. Despite the wind and rain it doesn’t appear to have been a problem that the roof wasn’t finished.

Thatched roofed cottage with a partially replaced thatch roof viewed from the side with a large blank gable end nearest the camera. Large piles of reeds are piled in front of the cottage hiding the door and most of the windows partially obscured behind a stone wall between the roadside and the front of the cottage. A section of modern scaffolding is set up spanning the wall beside the front of the cottage to provide easy working space beside the roof. A single bundle of lashed up reeds waiting to be installed rests between the scaffolding and the one remaining old section of thatch on the side of the roof nearest the camera.

Sheaves of partially tied up reeds extend above the top of the roof from the far side.

A partially ruined stone shed can be seen at the rear of the cottage with a line of bushes behind it.

Always disappointing when the little English village where the murder takes place has no #thatch roofs.

Thatching uses the rain’s angle of descent against it. The material isn’t in itself waterproof, but it guides the drops from the roof’s surface to the ground. It’s gravity judo. I watched the thatch going up on this row of cottages. It was weirdly restful.

Just read a fantastic one, on the work of John Letts, from 2001:

"No one had excavated a thatched roof before."

"Before systematic crop breeding, cereals evolved into local land races. Different soils, slope, shading and drainage gave endless possibilities for adaptation. With variety in the seed stock, crops would grow differently even across a single farm. Whatever the weather or diseases, something would always flourish."

"Old thatch provides an opportunity to study this lost diversity. Letts often finds a mix of bread wheat, English rivet wheat - not grown commercially for more than a century - rye, oats and barley. He has also found 35 different weeds, from corn cockle and cornflower - now vanished from English farms - to yellow rattle and cow wheat."

A beautifully kept thatched roof house in Burton-on-the-Hill, with a Cotswolds limestone exterior and a lot of bushes and vines growing on and near the home.

The North door of St. Edward’s Church in Stow-on-the-Wold. The door is closely flanked by two ancient yew trees, rumored to be J. R. R. Tolkien’s inspiration for the “Doors of Durin” in the The Lord of the Rings. The door is arched at the top and made with large wood boards, the trees are so close that the trunks are fused with the building.

Entrance to the St Pancras Renaissance hotel, a large 4 story hotel with ornate brick work and arched windows. The entrance is to the right of the frame and the curved building is to the left. Taken on a bright sunny day with a fish eye zoom that exaggerates the building's curves.
