Work in progress 👏 I inherited a 100 year old summer house that is not in the greatest shape. This summer, I started to renovate the windows. I'm a city girl, and I really don't know how to repair literally anything. But look what I've learned! 💪💪

For an old wooden house like this, I've had to find traditional materials suitable for conservation building. Surprisingly, it was quite difficult to find old-school windows putty just made from chalk and linen oil. But I did find it (thanks to @suomenluonnonmaalit) and boy it looks good 🩷🩷

Die traditionellen Turf Houses in Island faszinieren mich durch ihre Bauweise: Grassoden dienen nicht nur als Dach, sondern bilden zusammen mit Steinen die dicken, isolierenden Wände. Die Konstruktion kombiniert Naturmaterialien wie Holz, Stein und Torf zu einem erstaunlich stabilen und gut isolierten Zuhause, das optimal an das raue Klima angepasst ist. Dennoch war das Leben darin nicht immer komfortabel: Bei starkem isländischem Winterwetter konnte es vorkommen, dass Feuchtigkeit eindrang, der Rauch aus der offenen Feuerstelle schlecht abzog und es trotz der dicken Wände oft zugig blieb.

From the archive: Bricks! Bricks are very local, and old ones were probably made pretty much on the site of the building or wall you're looking at. The colours are good, especially in sunshine, and I like the regular/not regular contrast of the bricklaying versus the homemade look of the bricks themselves.

More #Introduction I originate from Scotland but I've been based on the Isle of Wight for most of my life.
