"Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear – not absence of fear." -- Mark Twain, Pudd'nhead Wilson

Sickened by the cuts to the #MarkTwainPapers at #UCBerkeley. I spent a lot of time there as a graduate student while working on my thesis. It's a gem.

I’m the daughter of an immigrant, born and raised in SoCal, educated at #Berkeley — and in 2025, I’ve never felt more proud to say those words out loud.

If 2025 has proven anything - it takes a little more than some fire to take down the #LosAngeles spirit.

"Bees, wasps, and ants all belong to the order Hymenoptera, meaning membranous wings. Most honey bees, yellowjacket wasps, and ants are social species. These insects live in societies with overlapping generations and complex visual and chemical communication systems. For example, honey bees do a “waggle dance” to communicate the distance, direction, and quality of nectar and pollen resources. Most bees, however, are solitary. They provision each egg with just enough pollen and nectar to grow to adulthood, and then fly away forever. When foraging among flowers, bees accidentally drop pollen, which pollinates the plant. Nearly 4,400 different species of bees inhabit North America, and more than 20,000 species of bees exist worldwide. See “The Intriguing World of Insects” on display, pre-security, in the International Terminal. http://bit.ly/IntriguingInsects" This was posted to our Instagram account on October 31, 2019 – https://millsfield.sfomuseum.org/instagram/1729355917/

Today in Labor History May 15, 1969: Police fought students in the Battle for People's Park at the University of California Berkeley, California. The battle was over a small strip of land that the students had claimed as community commons. Governor Ronald Reagan sent in National Guards to reclaim the Park. Police gunfire killed a bystander, James Rector, and wounded 60 others, including Alan Blanchard, who was blinded for life. Street fighting continued for 17 days. Another 150 demonstrators would be shot and wounded. The battle for the park has continued ever since, with the university continuing to claim ownership and threatening to turn the park into everything from units of student housing to a parking lot. The defenders of the park have done numerous direct actions over the past 50 years to defend the park, provide mutual aid, provide free food and clothes to unhoused folks, and offer community classes. As recently as 2024, the cops have attacked, beaten, and/or arrested park defenders.

The regime launched an investigation into the University of California, Berkeley, on Friday
centered on foreign funding,
making it the latest university to be targeted by the federal government.

The investigation revives criticism from several years ago about the university’s partnership with China’s Tsinghua University.

It comes after Donald Trump earlier this week signed a series of executive orders focused on universities that he views as liberal adversaries to his political agenda.

One order called for harder enforcement of Section 117,
a federal law requiring colleges to disclose foreign gifts and contracts valued at $250,000 or more.

The Department of Education’s office of general counsel will investigate “UC Berkeley’s apparent failure to fully and accurately disclose significant funding received from foreign sources,” education secretary Linda McMahon said in a statement.

UC Berkeley denied the government’s claims, saying that for the last two years,
“UC Berkeley has been cooperating with federal inquiries regarding 117 reporting issues, and will continue to do so

#Drumpf admin targeting of top universities does not spare #UCBerkeley whose #CalBear has been poked and probed by the President's fave pro wrestling doyenne now also in charge of the Dept of #Education.

Linda McMahon's #RWNJ minions have put the top #WestCoast public #university and research center under heat lamp of scrutiny for taking in hundreds of millions in donor dollars linked to foreign governments including #China, and a supposed culture of Title VI #discrimination against white and Jewish students. The President has personally targeted and threatened defunding the top tier #college for years, dating back to his first term.

Not only has the #campus been accused of the #CampusAntiSemitism trope but are dealing with 117 total issues laid out by federal authorities now seeking to #defund the public institution.

"Roger Studley, founder and community manager of #Berkeley #Moshav, said the idea has been in development for more than a decade. He was first introduced to the concept of #cohousing while in graduate school at #UCBerkeley, around the same time he was reconnecting with his #Jewish roots after years of distance from #Judaism.

As Studley deepened his involvement in Jewish life, he began to imagine a blending of these two ideas. The result was the formation of #BerkeleyMoshav — a community where Jewish life will be one aspect of daily living, but where people of all backgrounds are welcome, he said."

Ok we got one (1) R1 saying something, at last!

"we will stand up for Berkeley's values and defend them to the very best of our ability."

Was that so hard??

Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost, UC Berkeley

Like many of you, we are gravely concerned about recent Federal government actions in regard to higher education. While we recognize that the government plays an important ole in addressing discrimination and ensuring good stewardship of public resources, we see recent actions going beyond those purposes in ways that threaten core values: academic freedom, freedom of inquiry, and freedom of expression. We do not know what demands the Federal govemment may make of Berkeley, but do know that we will be steadfast and unrelenting in our efforts to defend those core values. A Berkeley without academic freedom, without freedom of inquiry, without freedom of expression is simply not Berkeley. We recognize that some of you may find our statement too timid or too bold or deficient in some other way. ... . But what we do know is that we will stand up for Berkeley's values and defend them to the very best of our ability. For 157 years through the education it provides and the research it produces, Berkeley has produced immense economic and societal benefit to its students, California, the nation. and the world: this societal jewel needs to be preserved and defended and we will toil tirelessly to see that it is.
