“It’s an exciting victory not only for
Gitxaala but for all nations,” said
Gitxaala Chief Councillor Linda Innes
after the court ruled that the province
must consult with First Nations before it
automatically grants mineral rights to
prospectors through an online system.
“B.C.’s out-of-date, colonial, mineral-
tenure regime violates Canada’s own
laws, the UN Declaration on the Rights of
Indigenous Peoples and our Gitxaala
laws,” she said in a statement.B.C. Court of Appeal
rules First Nations
must be consulted on
mineral claims

Two of three judges ruled B.C.
courts must honour province's
Declaration on the Rights of
Indigenous Peoples Act it passed
in 2019 and UN equivalent
when granting mineral rights
on Indigenous land. One judge
dissented

@cbcnews @british-columbia-cbcnews Maybe if the didn't continue to roll over and title, , and , the courts wouldn't have to be in the driver's seat?

#FlashbackFriday
Autumn 2021.
Warming up & chatting with #HereditaryChief Sonny Wallas (David Hanuse), Chief Ye-kue-klas of [Gwat’sinuxw (Quatsino)] nation.
He was sharing with me about feeling bullied/outnumbered by band council folks who are dishonouring their ancestors/betraying Creator & his work with culture & language preservation.

Wallas’s great-grandfather was James Wallas—coauthor of #Kwakiutl Legends. He was the former hereditary Chief of the Quatsino #FirstNation of the Northern #VancouverIsland #Kwakiutl.

Today, November 19, 2025, we mark two significant advances in our struggle for the recognition of our rights:

Obtaining a copy of the lease – provided by the colonial administration, but received UNDER FULL RESERVATION OF RIGHTS AND UNDER EXPRESS PROTEST. We neither accept nor legitimize their jurisdiction; we must continue documenting and challenging their system.
Complete administrative response – including the requested account statements. Every exchange serves as further evidence of our resolve and our unwavering determination. Each colonial document is now integrated into our sovereign counter-archive. Every email, every attachment, every reply becomes part of the living memory of our resistance.
Yet we must remain vigilant: nothing is resolved. A hearing before the TAL remains scheduled for December 9, 2025. An attempt to terminate the lease is underway. The colonial threat is real and ongoing.

Please share this update and circulate this information widely. For now, our collective vigilance remains our strongest weapon.

Stay awake. Stay united. Stay sovereign.

To fix the climate, simply empower #Indigenous people

by Kiki Taufik, 10 Nov 2025

"Climate change is the defining issue of our age. While nations search for complex technological solutions at this year’s high-stakes climate meeting in the Amazon city of #Belém, a simpler yet powerful answer has been waiting in the wings. I saw it firsthand in the forests of #WestPapua’s Bird’s Head Peninsula in the company of #IndigenousYouth from the Amazon, the #CongoBasin, and #Borneo.

"They showed me a truth that the world has been overlooking: one of the most effective climate solutions lies in empowering Indigenous people.

"In this way, we can prevent an immense amount of carbon emissions from #deforestation and preserve priceless #biodiversity and all the benefits we reap from it. It’s a strategy that more than pays for itself."

“There is a general reluctance to interpret free, prior, and informed consent as anything beyond a procedural duty to seek (not necessarily obtain) consent — and to equate the standards set in #UNDRIP with the existing Canadian legal standards.”

Everyday we honor them. Today, for us settlers especially, is a day 2 reflect on how we can integrate reconciliation with our behavior & lives for the next year. How can we become active, physical vehicles for enacting decolonization within & without? #Decolonization #Truth #Reconcilliation #UNDRIP
