#UPS also managed to deliver on the wrong day to the wrong location today after previously having accepted rescheduled home delivery tomorrow so no-one gets any point on this order.
The saga continues. USP fucked up and they say "To start this investigation, I will first need to ask you to have a claim submitted by the sender.", So I guess I need to contact Aisler? And it will also take more time. #UPS Never again...
20 days until Christmas; that means, less than three weeks of peak left. If you work for a company like UPS or FedEx, it's a blessing and a curse.
On one hand, it's very hectic and very busy. On the other hand, the bonuses and OT add up quickly come payday. And those jobs pay weekly.
**Emergency powering the home using solar in the winter time**
TL;DR
Yes, even in winter time with a weak sun, partial independence from the electrical grid is somehow possible for me using PV, house battery and smaller UPSes. It showed during the last outage event.
Extension of this mastodon post.
What happened
Today it was quite an interesting scenario that tested my independence from the electrical grid.
The power went out because of some renovation work on the grid nearby. I didn’t get the usual message from the local electro-distribution company. It looks like their messaging system failed again.
Being disconnected from the grid is usually not an issue (at least in summer), because I can switch the whole house to the PV powered inverter/UPS. In summer, the battery (20kWh) can power the house a whole day or more.
But now is winter and I didn’t know how long the outage will last.
After some days of thick fog and clouds, the battery was empty (22%).
And servers must run. It started with self-hosting some personal services, which extended to some professional services.
And of course, the house should be warm too. But, the servers first.
The first line of defense – two small server/router UPS-es (Powerwalker) powered the equipment for 30 mins, and when they were almost empty, I decided to switched to the big house UPS.
The speed of discharging of the small UPS surprised me, because last time, they lasted for more than one hour. The beeping of one critical UPS speed up when it dropped below 20%. Afterwards I checked the stats in my Home Assistant and noticed a sharp drop between 60% and 20%. I need to explore this issue, maybe the UPS batteries are bad or a new load (server) I connected to the UPS lately kicked in and draw more power in that moment.
The PV production at that moment was only approx. 500W (of 12kWp). The house load was 600W.
I made a switch (I have manual switch grid – UPS for the whole house).
I was observing the charge of the house battery and luckily, the weak sun was enough to held the house battery charge steady at 22% for the next hour (see the plateau at 22% on this chart):
Of course I turned off the heat pump to reduce the consumption. When HP starts and if it detects the heating system water temperature is low, it draws a lot of power (up to 6kW). That would empty the battery quickly and I didn’t want to risk it. So I fired a backup wood stove to heat the house.
All equipment was running smoothly, the house was warm and I was drinking a tea in delight.
After 2 hours, the grid was restored. It was interesting how I noticed. I heard one small UPS beeped once. It looks like the inverter trips for a moment, when the external grid is restored. I checked the main electricity meter and it was true, the grid was back.
I switch back from inverter’s UPS to grid.
I was happy that this stress test in the worst (PV) conditions went ok.
BTW, it probably wouldn’t work at night. For such scenario, a generator connected to the inverter would be necessary.
After
I already have notification of grid disconnect in Home Assistant, which is quite handy.
After the event I created a new automation in Home Assistant: notify me when the grid is back, so I don’t need to check the electricity meter (or listen to the beeps of the UPS):
Would a bigger house battery help? Probably not. After several days of no sun, it wouldn’t make a difference, because it would be empty too.

UPS emailed me to say they're about to deliver a parcel "Sat, 12th April". Or, maybe part of their system is cursed and uses middle-endian date format, which screwed-up how a different part of their system parses dates, and the parcel is due to arrive today? 🤷🏼♀️
In #SanFrancisco recently a robbery victim was attacked and gave up $11 million in #Crypto during a broad daylight #HomeInvasion that occurred after he opened the door for a fake #UPS delivery.

Not sure why she'd say don't use the post. They were in a labour disruption so deliveries were uncertain, but they've got a tentative deal and they're all back at work. If you send it air/first class/whatever the UK post calls it, it should be relatively quick and reliable. If what you're sending would attract any duty / excise / taxes, Canada Post also imposes the lowest fees for clearing customs. That might not affect you, if it's a gift of low value.
DHL is "meh". FedEx is quick and reliable, and expensive. UPS is cheaper, fairly reliable, and tries not to run over packages with its trucks more than a third of the time, max. [1] Both impose fairly high customs and brokerage charges unless you use their most expensive options which include them IIRC.
[1] I literally had two deliveries in a row squashed flat with obvious big-truck tire tracks across them.

I was able to finally get in touch with a #UPS person and they told me which house they delivered to. I don’t really know how they beefed the delivery so hard, honestly. It was a close house but the numbers are pretty different.
But I went over and got my cards. However, they had opened the parcel and the packaging inside already. Oof.
But I got the actual thing I bought in the end.

Quick question to all #homelab users: Which #UPS (uninterrupted power supply) can you recommend?
Maybe not the answer you are looking for but an ecoflow delta pro has proved a very workable solution for me.
prime purchase reason was the battery storage and high output capability but I keep finding new uses.

#UPS didn't even try to ring bell even with note on door. They came before 1 and dropped the small box at my door. I didn't look at their picture. I got ones that have more sections for multiple reasons- 1) smaller carry size when I want my AMD too and 2) if a cane breaks, more parts that can be saved to keep another cane functional down the road. I really like the mini one. It's 6 sections and pretty cool. It's hard for me to fully collapse them now, but once I loosen the cords I'll be good.
