Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon Snapshot 4 released!

The fourth and the last snapshot has been released, highlighting the changes between the previous snapshot (January 29th) and the current one (February 26th). On March 26th, Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka will reach the Beta stage according to the planned release schedule.

The official plan stated that the Ubuntu release team wanted to release Ubuntu every six months, while relying on the modern software engineering practices. More automated testing will be made to ensure that future releases will have next-to-zero problems that may cause a delay of the release. Alongside this, the release process will be refined to achieve the goal of little to no human intervention when dealing with releases.

The Ubuntu release team describe the snapshot releases as not production-ready releases, but as testable milestones that allow you to try out the upcoming version of Ubuntu without having to wait until the official release.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon official wallpapers revealed!

Prior to the release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon Beta, the Ubuntu artwork team have finally revealed the official wallpapers for this version of Ubuntu that is scheduled for April 2026. Before, we just have a mascot name for the release.

Now, the official wallpapers are here, since this version of Ubuntu is a little more than two months away from the release. Meanwhile, the wallpaper competition vote is still running until February 20th, and you can vote for the wallpaper here.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon Snapshot 3 will get GNOME 50 Beta

The upcoming Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon’s third snapshot, which will be released on January 29th, will get the beta version of GNOME 50. It’s known that the stable release of this version of Ubuntu provides the stable version of GNOME 50, but the beta version will make it to the third snapshot of the upcoming release.

Just to remind you that Ubuntu snapshots have been first implemented in Questing Quokka in an attempt to streamline the development workflow and to gives curious users early access to what will the upcoming version of Ubuntu look like, with the first ever snapshot being made released on May 29th of the last year. This will make sure that automation is used to make future Ubuntu releases, such as this release, more stable.

GNOME 50 is currently in development with the Alpha version stripping out support for the legacy X11 desktop protocol as Wayland becomes more stable. Although there are still compatibility issues with applications that use the legacy X11 protocol in a way that Wayland hasn’t solved yet, such as remote access programs, Wayland is getting better. GNOME 50 will be released on March 18th, 2026.

However, the beta version of GNOME 50 will include more stability improvements and bug fixes as we venture into both the release candidate and the final release of this desktop environment. This way, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will use GNOME 50 as the desktop environment in the final release.

Ubuntu’s Resolute Raccoon 26.04 LTS roadmap!

Ubuntu has published the Ubuntu 26.04 Resolute Raccoon roadmap for the next LTS version last November, and the list of changes that will be made to this Ubuntu version is rather surprising. Those changes have been listed in the official Discourse forums since the start of the development, and we’re now at the stage where the beta version is only a month and a few days left. Full development is still ongoing, with the list of expected changes below:

• GNOME 50 will make it to the final release of Ubuntu 26.04, which is expected to be released on April 23rd, 2026. Showtime and Resources will become the new default applications in all desktop installations.
• As for Wayland on NVIDIA GPUs, including the latest GeForce RTX 50-series graphics cards released last year, outstanding stability and performance issues will be fixed in this release so users with those graphics cards can now have even better experience. Wayland will become the default starting 26.04.
• The fingerprint reader support has now become more powerful, because Ubuntu 26.04 LTS delivers secure, SPDM-based fingerprint authentication, which brings more reliability to the biometrics system in certified Ubuntu devices.
• As for the built-in software sandboxing solution, Snap, its integration with the desktop has now become much better than before. Snaps will play nicer with the Ubuntu desktop, by improving app recognition and by making launchers behave more predictably.

Alongside that, there have been plans to make accessibility more visible, and the Ubuntu’s goal is to make the whole operating system accessible to all users from the very start. In enterprise environments, enhanced cloud authentication has been achieved using a first-party authentication daemon called authd. This will make enterprise authentication with different services easier and smoother, ensuring cohesive authentication across enterprise developments.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS also enhances the developer experience on Windows by introducing a better experience with consistent and predictable workflow in the latest WSL images. Ubuntu Pro is also supported, with the necessary polishes being made to provide post-release support. Documentation will also go through a huge rework to fend off old docs and add new ones, to keep the user documentation in par with the latest Ubuntu releases.

The release milestones are as follows:

• Feature Freeze: February 16th, 2026
• User Interface Freeze: March 12th, 2026
• Beta Release: March 23rd, 2026
• Final Freeze: April 16th, 2026
• Final Release: April 23rd, 2026
