HEGSETH SPENDS 6.9 MILLION ON LOBSTER TAILS/SNAP LOSES

Heather Cox Richardson 3/10/26
HEGSETH SPENDS 6.9 MILLION ON LOBSTER TAILS/SNAP LOSES
...according to a report from government watchdog Open the Books,
the Pentagon under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth blew through
$93.4 billion in September 2025 alone, with more than $50 billion
going out in the last five days of the month alone.
To spend the entirety of the defense budget, rather than lose it,
Pentagon officials bought "a $98,329 Steinway & Sons grand piano
for the Air Force chief of staff's home, $5.3 million for Apple devices
such as the new iPad, and an astronomical amount of shellfish,
including $2 million for Alaskan king crab and $6.9 million worth of
lobster tail. (Lobster tail is apparently a favorite of Hegseth's
Pentagon—the department spent more than $7.4 million total on the
luxury item in March, May, June, and October.) In other pricey food
purchases, the government decided to drop $15.1 million for ribeye
steak (again, just in September), $124,000 for ice cream machines,
and $139,224 on 272 orders of doughnuts.”
[Meanwhile] In October, Houghtaling noted, the administration said it
could not fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, because the government had
shut down. Millions of Americans lost food benefits.

'It's a mess', volunteers say as thaw reveals city park and river garbage
The recent warm spell is giving Londoners a look at a familiar spring eyesore along city roadsides, riverbanks, in parks, and near public pathways—garbage.

Pete Hegseth spent $93 billion in a single month at the Pentagon, including hundreds of millions on furniture, millions on ribeye steaks and king crab, plus a $98K Steinway piano and $12K fruit basket stands.

More proof DOGE was never about finding waste, fraud or abuse. It was purging the government so that they could make it smaller and fill that smaller government with loyalists.

In order to be wasteful there needs to be a surplus of energy. We receive a surplus of energy every day. It is solar energy.

Solar energy is stored in the biosphere. Plants grow, we make food and most important stockpile food.

Managing this energy well allows us to work less and live from the stockpile. The stored energy becomes very important and therefore needs protection.

The surplus of energy can also be turned into weapons.

We are the only species with the ability the self-destruct. We have access to an abundance of resources, but fail to share it collectively. As individuals and as a collective we fail to manage our resourcefulness.

The dictate of utilitarism does not it easier. Every action and subject has to be useful. Being wasteful is not tolerated and this leads us to very specific set of problems.

But first I'd like to pivot back to solar energy.

I am still thinking a lot about this "Philosophize This" episode: philosophizethis.org/podcast/h

The topic is highly relevant. Bataille argued that self-destruction has its origin the solar energy surplus.

It is a very interesting reasoning. I'll try to summarise the idea here and add my personal thoughts.

Edmonton's single-use waste rules were controversial and unpopular when introduced in 2023 — but new data shows the changes are having the intended effect of reducing garbage.

On Half Litre Kettles and Tea Drinking

Reading Time: 2 minutes

For years I thought, "I want a smaller kettle so I can boil enough for a cup of tea or to make coffee, without throwing out two thirds to three quarters of the water I boiled. For years I thought that getting a smaller kettle was a waste of money, as they are often more expensive than larger ones. That is, until a certain person was elected for a second time and that nation showed real hatred towards the entire world.

No Flies Attracted with Vinegar

It's at this point that I thought "Why should I get products from Country A when it arrests people for not being of the right nationality and punishes people from not buying locally. Let's remember that the world blindly uses phones, computers, operating systems, drinks, books, films and a lot more from that nation. If everyone was as xenophobic as that nation, then that nation would no longer be a world power, but that's a distraction.

The advantage of a small kettle is that you boil enough water for one cup of coffee or one tea. You barely waste any energy or water, so you're more likely to have a second cup, and then a third, and then a fourth. You're also saving on plastic waste and money. If you buy 50-100 bags for a few francs you're set for several weeks. In contrast with bottled drinks you're shopping at least every six days.

I found that with a larger kettle, when I boiled 800ml of water, and put that hot water into a flask, with tea, the volume was such that it took so long to cool that I didn't drink the tea I prepared. With the new system I do.

And finally

I made the switch once my new habit was stable, rather than before. Now I use a higher percentage of the water I boil.

Andy Burnham made a number of statements, and they are worth noting and dissecting.
There are things to applaud but the tendency in a speech like this is to paint an overly celebratory picture, and to elide some of the real issues.

"A new sustainable method turns discarded #MobilePhoneBatteries and industrial lignin into a powerhouse material for #SodiumIon batteries.

"It is a stunning example of circular economy innovation. Rather than letting these materials sit in #landfills or go up in smoke, the team from China is giving the waste a high-tech second life.

"When tested as a sodium-ion battery anode, this composite of #nickel-#cobalt sulfides and #lignin-derived carbon delivered electrochemical results."
