On Half Litre Kettles and Tea Drinking

Reading Time: 2 minutes

For years I thought, "I want a smaller kettle so I can boil enough for a cup of tea or to make coffee, without throwing out two thirds to three quarters of the water I boiled. For years I thought that getting a smaller kettle was a waste of money, as they are often more expensive than larger ones. That is, until a certain person was elected for a second time and that nation showed real hatred towards the entire world.

No Flies Attracted with Vinegar

It's at this point that I thought "Why should I get products from Country A when it arrests people for not being of the right nationality and punishes people from not buying locally. Let's remember that the world blindly uses phones, computers, operating systems, drinks, books, films and a lot more from that nation. If everyone was as xenophobic as that nation, then that nation would no longer be a world power, but that's a distraction.

The advantage of a small kettle is that you boil enough water for one cup of coffee or one tea. You barely waste any energy or water, so you're more likely to have a second cup, and then a third, and then a fourth. You're also saving on plastic waste and money. If you buy 50-100 bags for a few francs you're set for several weeks. In contrast with bottled drinks you're shopping at least every six days.

I found that with a larger kettle, when I boiled 800ml of water, and put that hot water into a flask, with tea, the volume was such that it took so long to cool that I didn't drink the tea I prepared. With the new system I do.

And finally

I made the switch once my new habit was stable, rather than before. Now I use a higher percentage of the water I boil.

Obsolete hardware

Whenever I need to run an operating system on obsolete computing hardware, I find the smallest distribution Puppy Linux comes into mind.
The last number of years Slitaz has been doing an enormously great job keeping my old hardware to chug along.

Slitaz is so small it can run on RAM:

That's Amiga speak for ramdisk

Short article #clseries #lazyEvaluation #efficient #commonLisp #lisp . Just an example of using series to in-place alter a nested list by acting on its scanned fringe, incrementally in a repl.

Oh that's actually the whole thing (- explanation)

We certainly will need to preserve the #tech and #knowledge to build these and consider using #WasteHeat that way more often than not, because it is #simple, #efficient, has no moving parts and thus not failure points.

  • It certainly would make it easier and simpler to build a lot of #passive #sensors and also enable more #FrugalComputing just by virtue of being a non-moving, no-maintenance deal.

In case anyone gets reminded by this design: Yes, the Russians did abuse the same principle for RTGs like the infamous Beta-M...

Abandoned Beta-M type RTGs on the Kola Peninsula.

- An IBC-style container frame with a big metal cylinder mounted inside it. It has vertical cooling fins oun the outside. The container's side panels are gone alongside it's warning signs for the radioactive content of the RTG.

- A second, less-vandalized container is next to it, tho similarly disrepaired and abandoned to the elements.

FOSS Advent Calendar - Door 16: Command Your Filesystem with broot

Ever felt lost in a sea of files? Meet broot, the terminal file manager that gives you an eagle's-eye view of your directories. It’s not just a replacement for ls or tree, it’s a full-blown interactive navigator that shows your files as a live, searchable tree, complete with instant previews and powerful batch operations, all without leaving your terminal.

Unlike traditional methods, broot renders an intuitive visual tree where folder sizes are immediately apparent, and you can fuzzy-search, navigate, and manage files with keyboard shortcuts. Want to find all *.tmp files? Just type the pattern and jump to them. Need to move, copy, or delete files in bulk? broot lets you do it in a few keystrokes, with a live preview to avoid mistakes. Everything is local, fast, and keyboard-driven.

Pro tip: Use broot’s :rm or :mv commands to clean up your Downloads folder in seconds, or enable the “sizes” view to instantly spot what’s hogging your disk space. With broot, you’re not just listing files, you’re commanding them.

What would you organize with a filesystem visualizer that thinks like you do? Taming a cluttered project folder, finding duplicates, or just navigating at the speed of thought?
