Study: Unpatched PCs compromised in 20 minutes

According to the researchers, an unpatched Windows PC connected to the Internet will last for only about 20 minutes before it’s compromised by malware, on average.

That figure is down from around 40 minutes, the group’s estimate in 2003.

This has some interesting consequences other than the speed of the attack, because 20 minutes is not enough time to download the patches required for a new computer when first hooked up to the internet.

Looks like we’ll have to start downloading the patches onto already patched and protected machines and then transfer them to the new machines before connection to the net.

Microsoft released a patch for another exploit yesterday, and even though the patch is available of the “Windows Update” site, how many people will have it installed by the end of the day, or the week, or next month?

Computer security is an important issue for everybody, whether you’re on a dial up connection or broadband. What you download, install and allow access your computer is solely your responsibility.

All versions of Windows since Win 98 SE ship with Windows Update installed to automatically download the latest patches but how do you have yours configured? Or did you just disable it and say “I’ll do it myself”?

Windows update can be set to either notify you of new patches available for download.. or download them and then tell you there ready to install, or nothing.

If you don’t have it set to download updates and then notify you you’ve really got to change your settings, as it’s all too easy to click “notify me later” and forget about it and then end up with a large volume of updates to download. And the larger the download, the less likely you are to do it… Get the picture?

Who out there isn’t running Anti-Virus software? Shame on you! Who out there is running anti-virus software and hasn’t updated recently? Well even more shame on you!

Who’s running anti-virus software and thinks they’re up to date? Are you sure? Have you checked manually? A lot of anti-virus software is configured to update once a week, but updates can and are released more frequently than that. Downloading manually, regularly, along with the automatic update keeps you safe all the time. Also, it can reduce the size of your downloads, instead of downloading a big file once a week, you get little ones once a day. You’ll hardly notice it..

Who’s got a firewall running? No? Get one. Don’t feel you need one? Do you suffer from the “Who’d want to hack me?” syndrome.. get over it..

Nobody might want to hack you, but that won’t protect you from worms that search for open ports to infect your machine…

For those of you that have a firewall running, do you know what ports and applications you’re blocking/not blocking? Why not? Are you blocking your antivirus software from updating? Have you just given every pop-up permission to access the internet after installing that download without checking exactly what you were giving permission to?

Internet security is very important even if you never keep private information a computer that is connected to the net, because the computer itself is an investment.

You paid for it! You get angry when some fool scratches the paint of your car don’t you? Well, I feel the same when I look at my logs and see that some clowns machine has been trying to scan mine so it can infect it, and he isn’t even aware that it’s his fault for not being pro-active about security.

I can’t count the amount of times I’ve “repaired” systems for people who have been infected or caught by a Trojan.

Always I get them back up to speed, update their security and explain to them how to stay safe. You wouldn’t believe the amount of times I’m called back a month or to later with the same problems. Why? Because people are lazy.

You can’t afford to be lazy about security or it’ll end up costing you a lot more than a call out.

Microsoft and the anti-virus companies provide you with a framework to protect your investment! Use it!

Alle #API|s und #ABIs unter #Windows sind reine Bitten: Es gibt kein Anrecht (weder dokumentierte "MUST" capabilities noch juristisch) aufbZugriffe und Funktionen!

Wenn Signal kein #Shitcoin-#Scam (#MobileCoin) und #VCmoneyBurningParty unter #CloudAct wäre dann würden diese aktiv #Windows11 (und alle anderen Windows-Versionen) aussperren und stattdessen #SelfCustody, #Dezentralisoerung, #Tor und #Datensparsamkeit umsetzen!

Did anyone other than me get a really weird survey from Windows today or anytime recently?

They asked the sorts of questions that might have pertained to the unstable Windows Millennium Edition a quarter century ago.

I wonder what problems are being reported or anticipated.

The questions gave me the idea that Windows Team members don't know what they are doing and I hardly needed to be GIVEN that idea. It was already readily apparent.
