The pulsar signals are recorded as wavefronts (equiphase tangents), like in Huygens Principle. Each of the 16 antennas receives signals from any direction, but introducing delays (phase shifts) between antennas allows extracting a beam of radio frequencies ("steering" the antenna system to observe a small part of the sky instead of the whole sky).
