A bit late for #Taiwan's time zone, but it's never too late for a #228commemoration. What happened on that day and for way too many years after has left scars in the society. As could be seen in #Taipei at the 228 Memorial Park today. Justice has not been served yet. #whiteterror https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2025/02/28/2003832675
Today in Labor History February 28, 1947: The Kuomintang government in Taiwan put down an anti-government uprising known as the February 28 Incident. They killed 28,000 civilians. And in the White Terror that followed, the government killed, imprisoned or disappeared 30,000 more. These events helped spark the Taiwanese independence movement.

Taiwan under #whiteTerror was forced by the authoritarian Kuomintang (KMT) to represent itself as "Chinese Taipei" though in 1976, the International Olympic committee asked them to be simply called Taiwan.

General Cash-my-Cheque, a triad member and mass murderer of fine people in #Taiwan. His sculptures should be put in some dark basements. He has been orchestrating the #WhiteTerror and decades of oppression, murder and violations of #humanrights.

On this particular date, it's time to remind everyone that #Taiwan's way to #democracy, #civicrights and #ruleofLaw was a long and rocky path with plenty of tragedy, bloodshed and tears.
Never forget about the #228massacre and the #KMT's role in this. The #WhiteTerror era should serve as a stark reminder of what is at stake when #freedom is under attack.

I'm looking for some good light undergraduate-level books/articles in English about Taiwan under the Japanese and during the White Terror. History, culture, I would even love recommendations of short fiction if you have any.
Thanks

"For older civilians, the armed forces are tainted by memories of #MartialLaw, when #Taiwan was ruled as a brutal military dictatorship between 1949 and 1987. Between 3,000 and 4,000 actual or perceived critics of the military government were executed during the decades known as the #WhiteTerror. Some 140,000 were imprisoned."
