Don't trust a cowboy with clean boots and don't trust an author with no rejection letters.

Her path to success was ‘mostly horrible,’ says author Jordan Stephanie Gray — but now her debut novel is earning rave reviews.

The snow that melted off yesterday has been replaced -- with bonus snow! Looks like another snow day for some people. Good thing I work from home and bad weather doesn't stop me. ☹️

I have a character named Nami Chraetrac, which is just an anagram for Main Character. Her best friend is Fred Stebin. The names were meant to be placeholders, but I thought it was hilarious, so I kept them. 😂

‘It was the dream itself enchanted me’

My free newsletter is out. Where do ideas, themes and writing obsessions come from? Why write or read YA or not? Yeats's the rag and bone shop of the heart?

A brightly lit carosel at night against a black sky, its animals are lions, leopard, crocodiles and zebras, with no visible riders. This references the Yeats poem the Circus Animals' Departure discussed in the newsletter. The image from eric tomkins via unsplash

13. Favourite antagonist to write: Villains, anti-heroes, rivals?

I have written genuinely evil people. I prefer people who are flawed and who are doing something for motives which are not entirely selfish.

I wish I could talk to someone about the ending of my book series. It's been on my mind a lot lately. I know how it has to end. It has always ended that way, and always will. It's how to get the characters there that is the interesting part. Some of their paths are still a little murky, even to me.

overused words

I look for was were felt saw really just and a few others

This is not because they are inherently wrong but by checking for the words I can look anew at the sentence. There are sometimes shorter, more engaging ways to frame it. Doing this got 700 words out of the WIP although that wasn't the main aim.

17/1: a story you'd like to write but aren't sure you can?

Various categories.

On balance, I *shouldn't* write some stories which are for others to tell. If I write about a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, as a main character, I am possibly going to squeeze out someone who lived that being published.

There are stories I don't know if I *can* write technically. Actually every book seems an equal struggle learning how to write that book.

I wrote an article on writing bios after getting so many mediocre ones for writing conferences. Just posted it on my blog:

most productive writing space?

Needs a shutable door, wifi, power, and a chair and desk I can sit in for a long period. Pen and paper for mapping/brainstorming. Plus toilet and coffee making facilities in easy reach. View of trees from the window a nice to have.

Not needed for me, Hand crafted prayer bowls, different incense for each genre, Hemingway's testicles and Virginia Woolf's hearthrug, etc etc etc.

What I need is inside my head.

5. How are you affected by reviews?

Positive ones good for morale. Negative ones - varies. Some are just fair comment. "this wasn't for me" doesn't worry me. A few actively misrepresent the book, (story) seem malicious, twist facts. Some are silly to the point of being funny.

"The lead characters do not follow Catholic social teaching.' Um none of them are Catholics? Bad reviews enrage me but in with anger out with love, no good responding.

RT @AdviceToWriters: You want to #write a sentence as clean as a bone. That is the goal.
