New (at least for me) term alert!

TORTURED PHRASE: An established scientific concept paraphrased into a nonsensical sequence of words. "Mean square error" becomes "mean square blunder". "Breast cancer" becomes "Bosom peril". Sign of fraudulent research. Can be a product of AI technologies.

If you feel ashamed to disclose how you used genAI in your research, you probably used it the wrong way.

A closer look at the PubPeer discussions involving Esam Agamy (University of Sharjah Chancellor) reveals repeated concerns about duplicated images, reused data, and lack of corrective action.

PubPeer gives scientists and readers a chance to hold the record accountable — and these threads show why institutional response and editorial transparency matter.

A powerful new study (Richardson et al., @PNASNews 2025) reveals the scale of systematic research fraud: fake papers are doubling every 1.5 years - ten times faster than real science. Retractions and deindexing can't keep up. Journals look away. Universities stay silent. Ministries protect their own.

:doi: doi.org/10.1073/pnas.242009212

The authors call for independent, conflict-free structures with real power to act.

Annual global scientific activity captured by WoS as measured by the number of actively publishing journals, the number of journals deindexed annually by WoS, the number of journals with retractions, the number of journals with PubPeer comments, and the number of journals with suspected paper mill products. It is visually apparent that deindexing now occurs at a level far below the level of occurrence of journals publishing suspected paper mill products. These patterns hold for Scopus and MEDLINE.

Today is tax day. Our taxes are collected and budgeted frivolously by the current and completely inept administration. What do any of its members know about academic ethics and practice after grifting their way through life? Here is yet another example.

The University of Sydney has financial ties to the world's largest poker machine manufacturer and a global sports betting giant—both of which have funded its research and academic programs. Experts are calling for greater scrutiny of these "disappointing" relationships with the gambling industry.

Did small-brained ancient people bury their dead?

The archaeology team say yes, and that is shown in a Netflix documentary.

The peer reviewed science says that the evidence isn't there.

This article covers the story, including how a new peer review process might not work as well as intended.

@dangillmor Dan, as you know, it's possible to publish and to be cited fairly often without violating academic standards and ethics. Ridiculous numbers by cheaters disadvantage ethical scholars and discredit Academia. Faculty members are given time to explore new fields and to share expertise uncalculatingly. Apparently there are perverse incentives for those who are not really cut out for the academic life. Now we have to be concerned about the sources AI draws from as well as human learners and researchers. I get apoplectic about much smaller unethical practices than the El Pais article you cited outlines. Therefore at one point I wrote a series on What is the Academic Life? 1. General Answers to Essential Questions, 2. The Idea of the University, and 3. Upholding Professional Standards and Ethics, updated recently and bundled together at researchgate.net/publication/3

This is a long read, and a fascinating article exposing Spanish academics that have published an unfeasible number of papers each year. As in, a paper evey couple of days.

I never knew about this US 'market' where high school students are coached by researchers (who seem to get paid well) to write research papers, which are then hosted as preprints or published in student research journals (for a fee, of course). All to help those prileged enough to afford this to get into university.

1/2: Global Faculty Development might sound like a slogan or exaggeration of international outreach, but I learned from having such a position at Kansai University in Osaka from 2016-2020 that Global FD can have a specific and practical definition in a suitable context. Basically, Global FD means meeting the needs of non-native English-using faculty members in non-Western countries. Specific guidance could involve preparing teachers for English-medium (or other international language) instruction (particularly to classes with international students), giving presentations at international conferences, publishing journal papers, and other scholarly
tasks. Research findings: "Meeting Global Faculty Development Needs in Japan" at researchgate.net/publication/3 or academia.edu/38264974
