Most of us think of bats only when itβs time to decorate for Halloween.
But a large group of scientists finds them fascinating all year round β so much so that theyβve launched an ambitious research program, known as the Bat1K Project, to sequence the genomes of every one of the world's 1,300-odd bat species.
And the payoffs could be surprisingly high.
(This article is from 2018. See updates here: https://bat1k.com/)
Darkness evokes fear of hidden dangers and of menacing, supernatural forces.
But our limited senses make it easy to miss a real nocturnal drama taking place above our heads: a battle between bats and moths.
For insectivorous bats, itβs a battle to eat.
For moths, the battle is to avoid being eaten.

It's #BatWeek! The Little Brown Myotis lives throughout forested areas of the U.S. and is impacted by #InvasiveSpecies like invasive plants. Invasive plants push out native plants when they grow meaning fewer bugs for bats to eat.

Happy Bat Week everyone!! Bats are the largest group of mammals in the world, with over 1,400 species. They're essential to our ecosystems:
- Bats devour insects: Insect-eating bats support crops globally and help farmers minimize the use of pesticides.
- Some bats, on average, can eat up to half their body weight in insects nightly. Pregnant and nursing mothers can consume the equivalent of their body weight each night.
- Bats pollinate: Nectar-slurping bats are vital to healthy ecosystems and are essential for maintaining food
supplies around the world. Bats pollinate the food we eat like dates, durians, pitaya, and other crops. They also pollinate agaves, wild bananas, balsa trees, cacti, and many other plants.
- Bats disperse seeds: Bats are superstars of seed dispersal. Bats drop seeds that facilitate plant growth and regenerate
forests, deserts, and other habitats crucial to supporting a variety of wildlife.
