Waiting to start for the midwinter-waterbird counting. This is done today in Europe, Asia and America, I have been told. Last year we had some ice, today we have fog. Just wait a bit longer for a clearer sight. Enjoy your day ❤️🦆

With all this wind and rain in Melbourne today I'm glad I did some extra bird count surveys yesterday. Poor things will be blown away today. Hopefully it's calmer tomorrow to do some more.

There are just so many more hawks in rural France than I remember from rural Canada. I wonder what the numbers compare from the Christmas Day Bird Count.

Is anyone doing the Great Backyard Bird Count this weekend? Lots of activity at our feeders today! Woodpeckers, finches, bluebirds, jays, cardinals, titmice and chickadees to name a few :) I haven’t been able to get any good photos without spooking the birds, but here's a nice downy woodpecker.

The annual #birdcount is getting underway. birdcount.org

Made me simply list the abundance & diversity in my own #suburban #Backyard These are just off the top of my head:

Living in the neighborhood - Red-shoulder hawks, crows, bluejays, love doves, woodpeckers, cardinals, wrens, finches, and hummingbirds.

Transients - blue herons, osprey, turkey vultures, owls, swallowtails, egrets, and ibis.

Take a moment or two to stop and observe your surroundings. You might be surprised!

goes back and forth these days. We’ve had 2 days of with +5°. The yearly this year was a disaster. Never had that few. They found food elsewhere. And every time I decide to go outside it starts to rain. As now.
Only thing in flower so far are the hellebores. Snowdrops stick up, but that’s all.
Next few days winter will come back - snow and frost…
reduced to again…

This weekend was the Dutch "nationale tuinvogeltelling" [national garden bird count], apparently the largest citizen science project in the Netherlands. We counted 4 great tits, a blackbird, a jackdaw and two mystery birds, which was a better result than two years ago when we only saw three great tits, but that might have been due to the weather being better this time.
