#WyrdWednesday: Ruadán was the son of Bres, the half-Fomorian king of the #TuathaDéDanann, the people of his mother #Brigit. Before the second battle of Mag Tuired, Ruadán -siding with his father-came to spy upon the smith Goibniu and steal his magical secrets. Goibniu killed the lad, which caused his mother to invent the wild sound of keening to express her grief. For himself, Goibniu was able to heal his wounds by traveling to the sacred well on Slane Hill.

"We believe this tradition goes back thousands of years. It’s how the pagans welcomed the arrival of Spring. The white costume symbolises the light. We wear all white and we carry the light into the house after the dark winter. The straw hats of course have connections with the land and hopes of a good harvest. And then of course the crosses, well that’s the Christian-ising of the tradition I suppose."
