@k8vsy
High end calculators should have a boss key.

A friend asked me recently which of my calculators is my favorite. My answer was not that great. In order to answer this properly I would have to provide so many details that it would become difficult to follow. So I wrote a blog post about it that people can read at their own pace.

The TI-34 is a fairly basic scientific #calculator. I’m a big fan because it’s easy to use and not overwhelming.

I was reading the manual and discovered it has two functions:

ipart(x)
fpart(x)

These return the integer and fraction parts of x.

ipart(2.34)=2
fpart(2.34)=.34

Great! So, uh.. What are these typically used for? Why include them on such a *basic* calculator? #calculators #ticalc #ti34 #matheducation #mathchat

Irreal has an interesting post about prefix versus infix notation. This reminds me of (yet another) religious war that was raging in the 1970s: infix versus postfix in the calculator world, with most calculators using infix but HP using RPN (Reverse Polish Notation, postfix). I was firmly in the latter camp and hence find prefix equally satisfying.

I found my father's well used electronic calculator, a 3rd generation model for a market of maybe 100.000 pcs (this one is Sr# 85570). No bracket keys, no algebraic order. A former slide rule user wouldn't mind: the X-Y and the M keys were sufficient for rearranging a formula. In 1975, it cost DM200 ($350 today) and, I believe, it was worth it: with this calculator he made all the calculations for the house he built.

My latest article about some would use calculators even though we all have access to powerful computers. https://nickapos.oncrete.uk/2025/11/13/what-is-the-deal-with-calculators.html

@alex02 @nixCraft obviously with the "#AI" bs beibg allowed around it's every conspitacy theory about #calculators but worse since calculators still need people to understand what they want to calculate and they won't hallucinate "results" at random.

Some new from various places over the past few weeks.

A duck up close with water beading on its head. The water is swirling around it. The duck is a grey-green with black specks.A close up of the insides of a push-to-eject SD-card reader. You can see metal levers and pins covered by an orange film. Some other electronics from the inside of a laptop are visible around it.The CPU of a Casio CG-50. The PCB is a very vibrant green, with thousands of traces leading towards the glassy-smooth CPU. Various assorted components surrounding the CPU are visible. The perspective is somewhat dynamic, creating the impression that the board is rushing towards the lensA sunset behind hills with the sun just below the ground behind a clump of trees - creating a halo affect around the trees. A calculator you would approve of @SmartmanApps ! This might be one of my favourite algebraic #calculators, but then I was always a fan of Sharps. @calculators

I think it could be possible to compile BrainF to the MK #calculators. I don't think I could make a native compiler, but still. It sounds cool.🤔 #esolang
