The short explanation is that the US is a petrostate.

Fealty to fossil-fuel polluters has little to nothing to do with what voters want.

The fealty is structural, embedded in our institutions - industrial and military of course, but also academic, journalistic, cultural, financial.

good reporting by KFile such as it is but it fails to explain *why*.

It's why McCain went from championing strict climate legislation in 2004 to picking Palin as a running mate in 2008.

Why Obama talked about shutting down coal companies in 2008 to climate silence in 2012.

boy does the New York Times work hard to not say "fossil fuels" these days.

Watch out for those "human-caused forces that have been bringing abnormal heat"!

lol.

nytimes.com/interactive/2024/1

NYT: "For a year and a half now, the upper layer of the world’s oceans has been at or near its hottest temperatures on record. The seas absorb most of the extra heat that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases trap near Earth’s surface. So the same human-caused forces that have been bringing abnormal heat to towns, cities and landscapes are helping to warm the oceans."

“I just wanted to make sure that with the movie, we don’t ever feel like [it] is putting forward any message,” director Lee Isaac Chung, who grew up in Oklahoma’s tornado belt, told CNN. “I just don’t feel like films are meant to be message-oriented.”

Strange day when a film director says films are best when empty of meaning.

Twister 2O24 is crafted to convey only empty visceral sensation? Lifetime is a budget. Why spend 122 minutes on nothing?

In today's Hill Heat: Long-time federal prosecutor Cindy Cho, in a prosecutorial memorandum, lays out the case for charging oil majors with second-degree murder or reckless manslaughter for the July 2023 Southwest heat wave, with Maricopa County alone recording 403 heat-related deaths.

The inset NYT story on climate change fueling the catastrophic Texas wildfires somehow manages to not mention that it's Texan fossil fuels causing climate change.

"KCCI assigned a security detail to Gloninger but also, he said, “told me to dial down the climate stuff a bit”."

If you follow the money it's arguable that this is the end result of a calculated campaign of terrorism conducted by the fossil fuel industry in the interest of prolonging monetization. There's an anger factory operated by FF interests.

Every day of #ClimateSilence is money banked.

Here's an example of bad climate reporting by NYT's Soumya Karlamangla - repeatedly frames the consequences of humans burning fossil fuels on our climate (in this case, a season of extreme precipitation refilling California's Tulare Lake) as the fault of "nature".

nytimes.com/2023/04/02/us/tula

"We have no control over nature, and we have no control over the water flows that are coming around us"Tulare Lake Was Drained Off the Map. Nature Would Like a Word."For now, nature seems determined to win in an era of climate change""Nature's ascendance is not all bad news."

Here's an example of strong climate reporting by NYT's Catrin Einhorn - clearly indicates that the burning of fossil fuels is the source of the climate crisis, integrated into a local story (the collapse of California salmon) with its own specific issues. nytimes.com/2023/04/03/climate

"Fossil fuel emissions must be addressed, scientists say.""Globaly, the ocean has absorbed more than 90 percent of the excess heat trapped on the planet by greenhouse gases."California Salmon Stocks Are Crashing. A Fishing Ban Looks Certain.

Given that in such places as California the real estate industry has effectively climate-silenced the market with regard to sea level rise, this seems significant. The industry has craftily enrolled homeowners, who see their real estate as nest eggs and are thus willing to join in the deceit.

"Our results underscore the severity of the financial risks to current homeowners and municipalities posed by potentially widespread property price deflation."

However, a review of coverage by national news from December 31 through January 4 found that with one exception, cable news networks — CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC — and national broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, and NBC — failed to link these events to our warming ."

What do you call a long, “in-depth” article about a deadly superstorm followed by unprecedented heat that makes zero mention of #climatechange? Shoddy journalism?#ClimateSilence? @CNN surely you can do better. apple.news/AmosRv1j_Td6zg8wr8a
