Instead I'm just gonna say what my complaint was gonna be about.
It was gonna be about that some program didn't have some feature...even though I'm not even sure the program is open source...so modifying it if it wasn't would be highly impractical and also illegal.

Making music - trying to cover a song with some stretched-out fretting (3-7th fret)... and it's hard keeping the G string ringing.
I blew off recording last week, and it feels like I may blow it off again.
I don't know whether I should just find something easy to play.
I often try stuff that's hard for me, and do a version with many mistakes, rather than play something easier, with fewer mistakes.

Did a decent amount of reasonably good stuff at work today, but by the time I got home, I was (and still am) feeling like utter crap.
I was going to clean up the apartment some before my partner comes over tomorrow, and also want to do some writing, but it's anyone's guess how much of either of those things will happen.
I can just be sitting here in the very comfy armchair, and all of sudden things will ache. Being old really sucks.

It is really frustrating to set up my RSS feeder again. This isn't because of the process, but because you can search for rss feeds for your local news stations, get results, only to find out that they no longer support RSS - just facebook/twitter/instagram. Ugh.
Last night, a friend and I took part in the weekly quiz at a local pub. We were a bit stuck for a team name, and ended up hitting on the (we thought amusing) name “The Enshittiification Continues”.
At the end of the first round, as he always does, the quiz master came around to collect the team name – the bar staff then got to vote on the best / most amusing one, and that team got a packet of crisps (!) and an extra point.
So, we gave him the name – and he said he did not get the reference. We then attempted to explain the concept. That’s in spite of “enshittification” being a Word of the Year somewhere in the world in both 2023 and in 2024.
Being in tech, and an avid reader of Cory Doctorow’s work (mostly on the non-fiction side, but I’ve dipped into some of the fiction stuff too), of course, it’s a term I’m very familiar with. Last night’s experience was another reminder of the remarkably tiny interest and social bubbles in which we exist.
… our team name was not even listed as one of those that got any kind of attention from the bar staff, and we lost out on that much sought-after (!!) packet of crisps.
… we did, however, come second overall when the scores were totalled up, which was pretty impressive considering there were only two of us, and at least 14 out of 60 questions were sports-related (although we did nail 17/20 of the movie round, so there’s that). Hurrah!
Shout-out to the man Ash that runs that weekly quiz, he’s nice guy, and doesn’t get a ton of support from the venue, we appreciate him when we’re there!
In semi-related news, the fancy Nokē smart padlock1 that I was gifted as a birthday present ~10 years ago is the latest victim of capitalism and tech eating themselves.
Arrived home on Friday night to discover that the rarely-used gadget had been used to lock up a delivery, but that since I hadn’t used the app for months, Apple had kindly uninstalled it from my phone. The only problem was that I then could not log back in to my account in the app. A Reddit search later, and also a grep through the depths of my email – the company was sold to another one last year, the servers taken down, and the promised “transfer of function” to the new company’s app was never actually communicated to customers. Fortunately, a day later I was able to use the failsafe mechanism to unlock it (having already sourced a potential loan of an angle grinder).
My appeal to a support email address to resolve the issue has been ignored, but “rewarded” (!!!) by apparently immediately being added to the marketing email list for the new company, as yesterday I received a junk message. 🤬
Needless to say: the enshittification does, in fact, continue; and I am very annoyed about it.

The snowstorm that came through here a few weeks ago dropped enough snow on us that I could only push our door open so far. I snapped a quick photo of what had been dropped on us with my phone and closed the door against the bitter cold. It was more snow than usual in our area, more snow than I've seen since moving here fifteen years ago. I was glad to see it melt away, finally, as the temps steadily crawled above freezing in the weeks that followed. Now we're gearing up for round two and though I doubt it'll hit as hard as the first storm, I'm already over it. I'm dreaming of Spring, even though it only seems to last a fleeting few days anymore. I used to love Winter, but it seems the older I get the less I want to experience it. #winter #herewegoagain #complaining

Some quick thoughts on #SethGodin's #blog post today about #complaining.
I had a dream where my dad realized the damage supporting Republicans has and continues to do, and decided to change his ways. It’s a stark contrast from what really happens, which makes reality feel so much worse.
I ignore it, but even if he thinks he doesn’t hate anyone, he listens to and is a fan of people who hate and want to hurt others for being slightly different and he does what those people want their audiences to do.
The ideology of hate and lack of reason tears apart not just the families of its numerous arbitrary targets, but those containing both infected and normal people too. I would be a lot closer to my dad if I thought that he could be trusted to know the whole truth.
The converse example seems to be true, too—thanks to a humorous conversation that happened once, I know that my mother’s mother has absolutely no problem with me being gay and I’m very friendly with her now. (Did I actually post the picture of the cat with the Wii U stuff in the background? That was at her house.) She is a friend and ally to the real me and I know it. That goes a long way.
And he is a good person in basically every other aspect. I don’t know what to do about the conservative ideology that has its destructive hold on his mind.
