As a #Cyclist who is fortunate enough to live in a place where I can #Cycle all year round, #Autumn has come to be known to me as #PunctureSeason. With many #paths festooned with fallen sharp twigs and small branches, particularly after heavy winds, it’s sometimes like riding over an unavoidable set of #Stingers and to avoid them all is virtually impossible and one’s vehicle eventually succumbs to the inevitable.

#Transport for #London has published an interim guidance note on shared use bus stop boarders, outlining how these layouts should be planned and designed on #cycle routes. The note explains when Shared Use Bus Boarders (SUBBs) may be suitable, how they separate #cyclists from motor traffic and why they can encourage cycling by avoiding the need to overtake stationary buses. Monitoring suggests many cyclists prefer SUBBs, though accessibility groups have raised concerns about passengers crossing a cycle track to reach the bus. The guidance stresses local assessment, engagement and Equality Impact Assessments, as well as alignment with existing bus and #cycling design standards. It also reflects a government request to pause installations where passengers must board directly from a cycle track. #TfL plans further monitoring across London to understand user behaviour, accessibility impacts and how designs can be improved before final guidance is issued.

A document section titled '1 Introduction' discusses the Mayor's Transport Strategy to improve London's cycle network. It highlights road danger as a key barrier to cycling and introduces the Shared Use Bus Boarder (SUBB) as an alternative layout for separating cycle traffic from motor traffic past a bus stop, citing recent research showing high preference for SUBBs over cycling in the carriageway.A table titled "Table 1 – SUBB cycle flow and hour boarders and alighter flow considerations" shows four scenarios to determine suitability. The columns are: Scenario, Peak hour boarders and alighters, Peak hour one-way cycle flows, and Suitability? Scenarios 1 and 3 are marked "Yes*". Scenario 2 is marked "Yes* - if passenger flow goes into 'High' category (>450 per hour), not suitable". Scenario 4 is marked "No**". Footnotes indicate conditions for "Yes*" and "No**" regarding design context and alternative design.A diagram titled "Figure 1 – Recommended components of a with-flow SUBB" illustrates a segregated cycle track (coloured red/orange) adjacent to a main road. The cycle track is separated from the adjacent footway by a buffer strip containing a bus shelter (cantilever type) and bollards, and from the traffic lane by road markings, where a bus stop is situated with a 'Bus Stop' marking. Key dimensions and features are labelled, including recommended bus lane width (2.5m - 3.0m), recommended track width (1.5m - 2.5m), and absolute minimum clearances (1.0m and 1.5m). Details on cycle track flushness with the footway, cycle symbol markings location, contrasting colour requirement, tramline paving, road hump triangle markings, and a 1:20 gradient ramp are also shown.A page titled "5 Next steps" from an interim guidance note, detailing further monitoring by Transport for London and London boroughs on bus stop bypasses (SUBBs). The four required next steps are: verifying investment decisions via a robust understanding of SUBB impacts; comparing actual user interactions with predicted behaviours; understanding user attitudes and behaviours towards the bus stop area and cycling scheme; and addressing core impacts on mobility and visually impaired user groups, aligning with TfL's equality duty. This will inform future scheme development and training.

I find #biking in wet and windy conditions a good challenge and I don’t actually mind getting wet as long as nowhere is completely waterlogged. But today was particularly `fun’ because there is about a 4 km #North-South stretch which was just about full into the #wind and so I was two, maybe three, gears below usual, travelling at half speed and I do believe I was virtually stationary at certain points!

Today’s #weather is quite #stormy. There’s a strong #storm today with persistent heavy #rain and strong #SouthWesterly #winds gusting up to about 70 km/h but a steady 40 km/h. The #clouds are thick, cutting out a lot of light and making the whole day seem like dusk. So, it was best to be prepared for today’s #cycling and I wore my #waterproof #overtrousers as well as my usual #hi-viz jacket. Using #lights was also a must in these conditions.

Today I emailed my city councillor about getting like 30ft of bike path made so kids can ride their bikes to school without riding through a parking lot.

My best guess is that this is at minimum a two year mission.

Turkey is now officially worked off.

We rode a really nice but demanding 15.7 mile road bike ride from Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz CA up beyond the University of California at Santa Cruz this morning with the Tri Club. An 825 foot vertical climb from the coast to the top turn around really catches one’s attention. But the ride back down is well worth the climb.

We’re reasonably lucky in Santa Cruz county to have a number of nice bike routes with a wide variation, from hills, to coastal routes, to rides through the agricultural fields. Santa Cruz has a lot of work to do to improve marked bike lanes, but it is getting steadily better
