Day out with Moray to Sgùrr an Utha, just north of the main road to Mallaig.
Started off in nice sunshine, but rapidly clouded over. The cloud base was around 800m, so we just escaped, but most of the surrounding hills were in cloud. A few flurries of snow or rain, and not much wind, so a reasonable day.
I’m sure there are spectacular views from the summit, but those will be for another day.

Meallan nan Uan & Sgùrr a’Mhuilinn from Strath Conon.

An pre-birthday outing for Moray yesterday, summer conditions, a fairly short route picking up 2 Corbetts above Strath Conon. Although apart from the two summit ridges themselves, most of the walking was tedious terrain – boggy tussocky grass and heather – so it made for a longer day than expected. Very little snow on the bigger hills.

11.8km, 810m of ascent, 2 Corbetts.

Ben Rinnes is a distinctively shaped hill, always in the view from the Northern Cairngorms, & has always been on my to-do list. Today we did it.

Lovely bright sunshine, but the wind was baltic, and from the south so we had no shelter from it at all, apart from behind the summit rocks. Not a day for hanging around, so we just came back down the same way, total walk 3 hours.

With Moray in the county of Moray.

Brown Cow Hill from Corgarff Castle in Aberdeenshire with Moray yesterday. Sounds an unimaginative name, until you remember that many of the Gaelic hill names – Black Hill, White Hill, Grey Hill, Red Hill, Big Hill, Small Hill – aren’t exactly inspiring.
We did have some wildlife encounters – a mountain hare very visible still in its winter coat, and a few red grouse – which were great to see.

Outdoorsy people - has anyone dealt with access issues in Perth & Kinross shire? There's no mention of the (statutory requirement) Access Officer on the council's website. Had to raise a generic complaint and hope it gets forwarded to the right person.

But it's Perthshire, a lot of access issues. 🙄

Locked gates, if anyone was wondering.

A double gate (steel frame with steel mesh) across a track, the gates are closed and padlocked.

Picked an easy day for the first new hill of 2025: Meall Tairneachan - the Corbett just across the road from Schiehallion in the Southern Highlands.
The snow is all a memory - we're back to summer conditions. There was a cold wind at the summit, but we were sheltered on the way up and down by the forest and by the bulk of the hill itself.

Navigating by compass in the mist across a featureless shoulder, peat groughs and patches of sheet ice meant a straight line was impossible.

I've been playing this game for 40-something years, professionally since 2010, but when the mist thinned and my target ridge appeared dead ahead, it's still a wow! moment.

Still got it haha. 🗻

Looking across peat bog terrain, patches of sheet ice, a few small patches of snow. Moray the dog stood looking across. There's a thin mist, but the outline of a pointy hill can be faintly seen, with blue sky above.

Auchnafree Hill from Glen Turret above Crieff with Moray on Thursday. Probably the last day of summer conditions for a while, serious wintery weather coming in over the next few days.

Good weather has come back for a while, but still a cold wind. Headed up Càrn Mòr, a Corbett above the Lecht ski centre. The ski infrastructure is always grim, so avoided it and found a landrover track heading up from about a km beyond the ski centre.
Lots of boggy peat groughs, but easy walking higher up.

The forecast was for the least bad day in between two storm systems. In the event it was a real Goldilocks day: not too hot, not too cold, not too calm, not too windy, not too sunny, not too cloudy. A bit of mist covering the summits, but it cleared while we were there.

Meall na h-Aisre in the from . There's a lot of water on the ground, it was very boggy until we'd gained some height.

Mission: Lorna's Corbetts. Yesterday I helped Lorna tick off Cir Mhor and Caisteal Abhail. This is a big day by anyone's standards, and Lorna needed to do it between boats. No problem! A great effort, (Lorna has already done her Munros so she's no slouch!), the rain held off, and also nice to be joined by Emily, aspirant ML, and my Mountain Training mentee, who was shadowing the day.

First hill walk of the year, Geal-charn Mòr 824m, our local Corbett*.

Everyone else's pics from above the inversion have sunshine and blue skies. We climbed above the freezing fog of the inversion to find ... damp fog. But it's always a decent walk, even without the spectacular views of the bigger Cairngorms hills.

*Corbetts - the Scottish hills between 2500 and 3000ft, in old money.
